BREBEUF JESUIT'S SPRING MUSICAL - THE KING AND I
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I is a moving, radiant story of East meets West.
It is the early 1860s when newly widowed Anna Leonowens sets sail from her native England for Siam. Anna has taken a position as the schoolteacher for the children of the King of Siam. The King is determined to usher Siam into the modern world, and he thinks Western education can be a part of that. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by rulers of the West, and he takes Anna on as an advisor, asking her to help change his image. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King teach each other about understanding, respect, and love that can transcend the greatest of differences.
The King and I is full of beautiful music, traditional dance, and witty dialogue that has delighted audiences since 1951.

Brebeuf Jesuit Students Participate in Model United Nations Conference
Brebeuf Jesuit students participated in the Model United Nations Conference last Thursday and Friday. The Model UN is an opportunity for students to discuss and debate some of the world’s most pressing issues while lobbying on behalf of their chosen countries.
Brebeuf students performed admirably and won a number of awards. Walking away as the overall winner was the delegation of Nathan Nouri, Hugh Bromund, Grant Whitsett, Zev Burton, Spencer Wells, Delia Novak, and Clair Bromund. Brebeuf had nearly 60 students who took part, many of whom were first-time participants. Please congratulate students that participated. They represented Brebeuf Jesuit with both professionalism and intellectualism.

Student Spotlight

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the fact that Brebeuf is such a family-oriented community. Whether it is the faculty or the entire student population, everyone here genuinely cares about the entire person. It is so easy to meet a new friend or sit with someone at lunch, which is very rare to see and experience anywhere else. Along with that, Brebeuf gives its students so many opportunities to grow and become better people. From the countless retreats to service projects, Brebeuf offers a wide range of possibilities for students to live out what it truly means to be men and women for others, which is another aspect that truly drives my heart so close to Brebeuf.
Favorite Class
Last year, my favorite class was AP Psych with Mr. Petty. Currently, my favorite class has to be my ACP English class with Mr. Fanara because it is a writing-based class, and I really enjoy writing. Plus, I get college credit for it after I complete the course!
Future Plans
I am undecided as to where I will be attending college, but my top two choices are IU and Loyola University in Chicago. I am interested in double majoring in dance and exercise science, and I may want to get into physical therapy when I’m older.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Brebeuf Dance Team
National Honor Society
A-List Dance Center
Asian Student Union
Guatemalan Union
Cashier at McAlister’s Deli
Random Facts
I am very flexible.
I hate pizza.
I used to play the flute in middle school.
I’ve never been out of the country.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
My favorite TV show of all time has to be Full House, however, some my favorite shows on Netflix include Grey’s Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars
Any big Spring Break plans?
This year, I will being going to Florida with my entire family for the first time in awhile, that being my cousins and all. Along with that, I will also be going up to Chicago for one day. I am super excited to go, especially considering the fact that my family never typically goes anywhere for break.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I think it would be really cool to travel to the Philippines one day because both of my parents are from there, and I would love to learn all about my family’s history and background. It is such a different atmosphere over there, so I think it could be really fun to experience a place that is so culturally unique and practically home to me!
You are now in your final semester at Brebeuf Jesuit.  Has it sunk in yet?
I definitely think about it a lot, but it still doesn’t feel real to me. I try live every single day in the present because I know that these last few months of high school will fly by before I know it. I cherish the time I have with my friends and my teachers, so it is hard to even comprehend the fact that I will have to leave a place that I’ve called home for the last four years.
In what way have you changed the most since your freshman year?
Since my freshman year, I definitely feel like I’ve become a lot more confident and outgoing both inside and outside of the classroom. Although I am still a pretty shy person, I’m a lot less hesitant to speak up to others, which was very much nonexistent four years ago. Brebeuf has allowed me to mature into a young, intellectual adult, and I can definitely see that change within me.
Scholarship/Financial Aid News and Announcements
The backbone of all financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) which opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible for the 2018-19 year. Many schools also require completion of the CSS Profile CSS Profile, administered by the College Board, which asks more specific questions and accesses additional funds. The FAFSA is free; the CSS Profile has a small fee.
The VAST majority of scholarships (merit aid) are found within the individual college admission/financial aid websites and academic departments. Be on the lookout for additional essays, recommendations/nominations, and deadlines for these opportunities at the colleges to which you’ve applied.
Search for a specific scholarships in Naviance Family Connection in the “Scholarship List” under the Colleges tab. Sort by Scholarship name, Deadline, or Categories. Websites such as Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com are useful as well.

Brebeuf Jesuit and Butler University Work Together to Offer College Credit in Latin

Since its inception in 2006, the Latin program at Brebeuf continues to innovate. What started as 21 discipuli is now a thriving program of 100 discipli with two Magistrae (teachers). We offer a full range of Latin classes (Levels  I-V) and next year we will also offer Medical and Scientific Terminology open to all sophomores and above.
For some students learning complicated ancient grammar is exciting. Others find they can easily connect with the wide legacy of Latin literature.  Still others engage their imaginations in the diverse and etiological nature of Greco-Roman Mythology. In most cases the Latin itself draws students, but our trips to Italy and unique qualifications of our instructors also draw students.
Brebeuf has partnered with Butler University to offer optional Butler credit for Latin IV or V.  Brebeuf Magistra Rosina Catalan worked with the Department of Philosophy, Religion, and Classics at Butler to create this new offering. Professor Catalan, as she is called at the college level, regularly teaches classes such as Roman Perspectives and Greek Art and Myth at Butler.
Whether it’s in the field ascending Mount Vesuvius or in the classrooms of Brebeuf, our instructors Magistra Kris Schwickrath and Magistra Rosina Catalan continue to prepare our discipuli for college. As the poet Vergil once stated Fortes Fortuna Adjuvat (Fortune Favors the Brave) and those Braves who are bold enough to take Advanced Latin can now choose to benefit by receiving college credit.
If your third or fourth year Latin Brave is interested in this option contact Magistra Rosina Catalan at rcatalan@brebeuf.org.

Brebeuf Jesuit National Honor Society Students Participate in Service Projects

The Brebeuf Jesuit Chapter of the National Honor Society recently participated in two separate service projects.
A120 students spent their Friday evening at the Towne Meadow Elementary School carnival, where they led games, activities and even a face-painting stand! The following morning, nearly fifty students met at Oscar Charleston Park on Indy’s near East Side to plant 150 trees as part of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s 10,000 trees initiative. The initiative aims reduce sewer water overflow in our natural waterways by increasing storm water interception and eliminating water overflow by 2025. We’re proud of our member’s hard work and dedication to service!

Donate to the The Brebeuf Food Drive

Only a couple weeks remain to donate to this year's Food Drive that ends on March 29, 2018.
For years, our students, faculty, staff, and families have participated in this meaningful drive supporting St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, donating enough cans of food to fill two semi-trucks! In addition, cash donations from our school community are able to buy tens of thousands of pounds of food each year.
Homeroom classrooms at Brebeuf will hold collections to once again to compete for the grand prize – a pizza party. To maximize our school’s impact, this year’s goal is for every student and staff member is to collect 20 cans each.
St. Vincent de Paul feeds roughly 3,300 families every week, or roughly 12,000 individuals, many of whom are children and the elderly. Every can is helpful!
How to Help
To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver the items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), and bring donations of support to the Main Lobby Desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.
By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis! Let’s bring in those cans to your student’s homeroom and support St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.
