Student Spotlight

NIKHIL JAIN '17
Loves about Brebeuf:
I love that Brebeuf has allowed me to meet amazing people and huge influences on our community and country. The discussions with Sonia Nazario were especially interesting. I also love that Brebeuf is more of a community and family than most schools. This kind of love extends, not only through the student body, but also to the faculty and families here!
Favorite Class:
My favorite class would have to be AP Language and Composition with Dr. Sperry. I have grown into more of a writer during my time at Brebeuf and this class has definitely helped hone my skills. It also provides much more social commentary and discourse than most other classes, which is something I love.
Future Plans:
In the near future, I’m looking to study International Relations at a university in Washington DC. I may do some acting on the side as well. After that, I’m not entirely sure! Hopefully something in government and diplomacy, the Foreign Service, or the UN.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Speech Team
Theatre
Model UN
Comedy Club
Presidential Ambassador
Ignatian Scholar
Youth Volunteer Coordinator at Hindu Temple
Orchestra
Short film writing (outside of school)
Random Fact:
I specialize in accents and impressions and once convinced a group of about 40 people that I was British. I’ve seen them multiple times since then and they still have no idea.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Absolutely! Freshman year was an absolute struggle for me to adjust to my new situation. Once I learned how to manage my time and talk to my teachers, I started to perform better. I’m still not perfect and have to work just a little harder to finish my hours of homework, but I’m learning skills for college and beyond, so it’s all good!
Would you rather…
Go to the movie theater or stay home with Netflix?
Even though my mom says I spend way too much time on Netflix, I love going to the movie theatre. I’m a bit of a film nut so watching movies in that setting is really amazing.
Vacation in Hawaii or Alaska?
Totally Hawaii! I went to Kauai with my dad and it was probably the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.
Watch TV or read a book?
Though books are awesome, there are no Breaking Bad or Rick and Morty novels.
Travel by sailboat or cruise ship?
Definitely sailboat. I’ve never been on a cruise though. I was once in a hotel where the pool flooded, so I guess that’s close enough.
Go forward in time or back in time?
Go back in time. Then give a high five to the guy about to invent the high five and watch the world implode.

Accommodations for Students at Brebeuf Jesuit

If you believe that your student qualifies for an accommodation (i.e. extended time, computer usage, etc.) during finals, the Academic Counseling Office and/or Learning Center must have a copy of your student’s psycho-educational evaluation on file by this Friday, November 20, 2015 for your child to be considered for accommodations for extended time finals in December.
If you need a referral for a psychologist, please click here.  If your child already receives accommodations for finals, then you do not need to do anything more unless you want to pursue accommodations for standardized tests for college applications.  In order for accommodations to be given, each student must have a release on file with Brebeuf Jesuit. The release can be accessed by clicking here.
If a student would like to deny their accommodation rights, a written notice must be made from the student/parent to the Academic Counselor and the release form will be deleted.
Click here to download the Accommodations for Students at Brebeuf Jesuit document for more details.

Michael Sprague's Work to be Displayed in the Cordell Gallery

The Visual & Performing Arts Department and the Mothers Association welcome Michael Sprague to the Cordell Gallery (facing the Principal's Office).  Sprague produces functional ceramic work which he describes as a combination of East and West: "I use Asian forms (eastern) with crystalline glazes, which are European in origin (western). I sometimes like to incorporate wood or metallic looking elements to give a feel of antiquity.  Ultimately I try to make good work that is functional yet meditative."
Sprague’s work will be on display from December 1 through January 8 and is available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Brebeuf Jesuit.  Pieces selected as gifts can be picked up before Christmas Break.  Please contact Joe Winhusen jwinhusen@brebeuf.org for more information.

New Orleans Spring Break Service Trip

Brebeuf will be sending a group of students on the annual Spring Break service trip to New Orleans April 3-9, 2016.  This trip provides a unique experience for students wanting to spend their Spring Break helping others who have undergone the tragedy and destruction of Hurricane Katrina. We will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity and assisting the construction of affordable housing for the residents in need. Students will also explore the city to experience its rich culture and witness the rebuilding of New Orleans first-hand.
Interested students must pick up an application packet beginning Tuesday, December 1 in Room 182. The trip is limited to 24 students.
Please contact Karly Geisse with any questions at kgeisse@brebeuf.org or 317.524.7132.

12th Annual Turkey Bowl Benefitting Wheeler Mission

Come one, come all and bring your family and friends!
This Saturday, November 21 at the Carmel Ice Rink, plan to come cheer on the Brebeuf Braves Hockey Team as they take on the CIK Indiana Knights in the 12th Annual Turkey Bowl benefiting the Wheeler Mission.
Game time is 4:15 p.m.
There is no charge for admission, but we are asking all to consider bringing a turkey for Wheeler Mission, or clothing, hygeine products, groceries, and linens.
The team that brings the most turkeys wins the Turkey Bowl… So we need all of your help to bring the trophy to Brebeuf this year!
Turkey Bowling will take place after the game on the ice, and students bowl for free. Bring your school spirit, some turkeys, and cheer on the Braves to victory!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend Trip 2016 - Detroit, Michigan

During Spring Break 2015, Brebeuf students went on a service trip to Detroit. The students observed the spirit of the city, a sense of hope and optimism from its citizens, where the residents continually work to make the largest city in the United States to declare bankruptcy a better place. We wish to continue that profound experience albeit in a condensed version, adding more cultural activities relevant to the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
We will be participating in a variety of service experiences and take time to explore various landmarks and places that are culturally significant to Detroit including the Charles Wright Museum.
Interested students can pick up a permission packet from Karly Geisse in room 182. The trip is limited to 10 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you have any questions or want more details, please contact Karly Geisse at kgeisse@brebeuf.org.

Congratulations to Our Brain Game Team

Congratulations to the Brebeuf Jesuit Brain Game Team on winning their first match of the televised tournament this year, defeating Lawrence North, 15-13. This victory qualified Brebeuf for the match during the second half of the show, where Brebeuf then defeated Bloomington North, 22-15.
This is the first time our Braves have moved onto the second round of the tournament in four years! WTHR's Chuck Lofton, who moderates The Brain Game, stated that the 37 points scored between Brebeuf and Bloomington North was the most two teams have scored all year!

The Braves Brain Game team consists of: John Morrissey '18, Julian Boes '18, Andrew Caito '18, Hugh Bromund '18, Erin Linscott '18 and Bobby Morrissey '18, and is coached by Mr. Chuck Fanara and Mr. Travis Curry.

Mark your calendars and DVRs for December 19 at 7:00 p.m. on WTHR to catch the Brebeuf Brain Game Team in action.

[Now, just for fun, and to reward students that have read this far - the first two students to send an email to Mr. Higginbotham (mhigginbotham@brebeuf.org) with a subject of: "Only one month until Christmas Break" - will win a Starbucks or Panera gift card. Students only please.]
