Picture of the Week

Last Friday the Brebeuf Jesuit community gathered to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luthar King, Jr. Brebeuf Jesuit welcomed Rev. Dr. Allan Boesak (pictured above with Devin Wright ’16) as our keynote speaker for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation. He gave a powerful speech about letting our voices be heard and changing the way we think. Thank you to Dr. Boesak, the Black Student Union, the Brebeuf Jesuit Choir, and all who participated!

Student Spotlight

CARMELA MOHAN '17
Loves about Brebeuf:
I love the schedule and how it’s laid out. Students have breaks and PRTs that are specific times during the day where you can do homework, take a break, or meet teachers. I’m a transfer student and my old school didn’t have that incorporated into the schedule so those times are very useful.
Favorite Class:
It’s hard because I like them all. I do particularly like Computer Programming with Mr. Haynes because the programming assignments are challenging and interesting.
Future Plans:
I want to be an engineer and own my own engineering company. When I was eight years old I travelled to India with my family and I complained about how long the plane ride took and why we couldn’t just appear there in India. So my dad said I could make something that shortens the ride or that really does make us appear there and I found that fascinating. Ever since then I have wanted to try to find a solution. I’m looking into colleges now and so far I’m really interested in MIT, Rose-Hulman, and Rensselaer.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

EPICS (Engineering Club, which I started at Brebeuf)
Poetry Club
Karate
Random Fact:
I have four official names including one first name, two middle names, and one last name. I have also been a black belt in Karate since I was six years old.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Yes it is as academically rigorous as they say. Students have a lot to do. I transferred to Brebeuf at the start of 10th grade and within the first week I had lots of homework assignments, quizzes, and an upcoming test. I even told my mom when I started that there’s a lot more work here than at my last school. Coming from my previous high school to Brebeuf was almost like a culture shock because I didn’t expect how fast lessons moved and how thorough the math and science classes were here. Plus I had taken math in French until I was in 8th grade. Finals are also very rigorous because you can come and go for them which means that a lot is expected and lots of studying has to be done.
Would you rather…
Live in the city or countryside?
I would rather live in the city because I am not a country person. It’s pretty but I like the city lights even if there is light pollution.
Win an Academy Award or Olympic Gold Medal?
I would rather win an Academy Award. Despite my Karate abilities I am not actually good at athletics.
Play a superhero or villain on TV?
I would rather play a superhero because I think I would be better at playing that type of character. I can't act insane, so my villain self would probably look awkward.
Have the ability to fly or be in invisible?
I would rather have the ability to fly because it’s really cool. Also if you are in the middle of a crowd you can just fly past people to see what’s going on.
Be stuck on a broken ski lift or broken elevator?
I would rather be stuck on a broken elevator because there isn’t a lot around you to catch you on a ski lift. It might be awkward if you are stuck with someone else on the elevator but you have a better chance of someone coming to get you with the emergency button. Plus I can’t ski!

If tickets don’t sell out during the week, then gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Friday to resume selling. Students are allowed ONE free ticket and will need to pick up their ticket at the main lobby front desk too beginning on January 25. All-Season Sports Passes will be honored, but pass holders need to come pick up their tickets at the Main Lobby front desk and present their passes and tickets at the game. If the game sells out, students and All-Season Sports Pass holders will not be admitted to the game without a ticket. If tickets at Brebeuf sell out, then tickets can be purchased at Bishop Chatard. Hope to see you at both games to support your Braves.

Senior Yearbook Ads

Senior parents, are you looking for a special way to remember your student’s senior year? Then consider a Senior Yearbook Ad. The deadline to create and submit your senior student’s yearbook ad is Monday February 1
Visit www.yearbookforever.com, search for Brebeuf, and then design and pay for the ad online. If you need assistance, please consider attending a parent help session Saturday, January 23 or Saturday, January 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the France Stone Room.
Please note, a technical difficulty individuals may have in designing their ads is choosing pictures that are too large. If you would like to incorporate your child’s professional senior photos, please make sure the resolution is small enough to be uploaded.
Do not miss your chance to honor your special graduating senior with an ad.
Questions can be directed to Hadley Moore at hmoore@brebeuf.org.
