Matthew 8:8B “But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Matthew 8:10 “When Jesus heard this, He was amazed, and said to those following him, ‘Truly, I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith!’”
I enjoy the television show, The Voice, where singers compete in blind auditions. These wanna-be singers hope to be selected by a singing superstar for a coveted spot on their team. The contestants’ voices absolutely amaze me and I am always stunned when so many times they are not deemed good enough to be on a superstar’s team. But, I guess it goes to show that legends are not easily amazed by the talents of others.
Contemplating how amazingly talented a person must be to impress a superstar, my thoughts turned to the most amazing one of all – Jesus. Could Jesus have possibly ever been amazed by anything or anyone? Remember, Jesus was present at the creation of the universe! Remember, Jesus had beheld the glory of God! Remember, Jesus had enjoyed the lavish beauty of heaven firsthand! And remember, Jesus was truly part of God Himself! So, it would seem impossible to amaze the amazing Jesus.
But, the scriptures tell us that Jesus the Christ, the Ruler of the Universe, the King of Glory, the Beloved Son of God was actually twice amazed!
So, what could have possibly been amazing enough to amaze Jesus? In both instances, FAITH!
The first time we read in the gospels of Jesus being amazed is in Matthew 8. A Roman Centurion approached Jesus with a request to heal his paralyzed servant. A compassionate Jesus was prepared to depart with him but immediately the centurion objected. Instead, his request was that Jesus only speak “the word” and his servant would be healed. The Centurion’s response reflects his amazing faith in the Christ. This man believed with all his heart that one word was all that was needed for Jesus to achieve the impossible. “When Jesus heard this, He was amazed, and said to those following him, ‘Truly, I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith!’” The centurion’s response was evidence of his amazing, unwavering, unprecedented faith in the deity of Christ, in the greatness of His power, and in His overflowing compassion.
But, remember, Jesus was twice amazed. So, what circumstance led to the only other time Jesus was amazed? It too was faith, but unfortunately, this time it was a lack of faith demonstrated by those closest to Him. Unlike the Roman Centurion, Jesus’ hometown did not believe in His deity as Christ, nor the greatness of His power. The scriptures say Jesus “was amazed at their lack of faith.” (Mark 6:6) How tragic to amaze the Son of God in this way!
So, today, if we are looking to amaze our Savior, remember, it’s all about that Faith! Yes, our Savior loves us, our Savior cares for us, and our Savior gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. But, the Roman Centurion stands as our example that our Savior also desires to be amazed by our faith in Him. So, just like the singers on the Voice who amaze the legends, our faith can amaze Jesus, the amazing one.
Father God, may we amaze you every day with our unwavering faith in who you were, who you are, and who you always will be.
Blessings of Faith,
