A Note from the President

Happy New Year! I hope you’re as excited as I am to see what 2016 brings for your Tigers. I’m generally not one to make resolutions, but the holiday does offer an excellent opportunity for perspective – a chance to build upon the achievements of the previous year with  ambitious goals for the future.
One of the benefits of attending Louisiana’s Flagship University is the continued exposure to some of the best minds in the country – scientists who are solving society’s biggest problems and creative scholars who challenge the way we look at the world around us. And students who participate in research as undergraduates tend to enjoy better grades, build stronger networks, and develop stronger problem solving skills – all components that contribute to finding a great job and fulfilling career.
Help your students make the most of their time here on campus – encourage them to find a faculty mentor and participate in research through LSU Discover.
Whether your Tiger wants to cure cancer or write the next Great American Novel, there is a faculty member on our campus who can help. Questions about the program? Email lsudiscover@lsu.edu for details. And as always, thank you for trusting us with your Tigers.

Geaux Tigers!

Helpful tips for the new semester:
IMPACT Your GPA Workshop!
This national award-winning FREE program for first-year LSU students is January 11 & 12. The workshop will help your student develop new, effective study and time management strategies to achieve academic success.  View times and location.
Students who attend three or more SI sessions typically earn a 0.5 letter grade higher than students who do not attend! Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of weekly study sessions offered for students enrolled in historically difficult courses.  SI sessions are:
  • Free, voluntary, and open to all students.
  • A great opportunity to improve understanding of material and course grades.
  • An excellent way to meet other people in your class.
  • Guided by an SI Leader who has taken the course and is prepared to share with you what they have learned about how to study. The leader attends the class and works in close association with the instructor so that sessions are relevant to the material covered.
  • Find a list of spring courses with SI here.
As your student's champion, you are a valuable resource and our Family Guide to Supporting Success can serve as a reference for information and practical strategies to help you direct your student to appropriate campus resources.

LSU Libraries

Middleton Library Spring Construction Projects
Math Lab and Access Services Move, More Student Study Space Coming
Several construction projects will make quiet study space in Middleton Library scarce this spring semester. In January, construction for the new math lab will begin on the third floor of the library. Relocating the math lab, which is used by about 5500 students each year, will make it more centrally located.
Construction for a new Access Services space will also begin in January on the second floor of Middleton Library in room 241. Access Services, which includes Circulation and InterLibrary Loan, will move from the first to the second floor. The space on the first floor of Middleton will be remodeled for bigger and better student study space.
We anticipate noise and disruption during this time, and we will post regular updates on our blog and social media. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook for regular updates.
Spring E-textbook List
The Libraries list of free E-Textbooks for Students for the Spring 2016 semester has been posted. More titles have been purchased and will be added to the page as they become available.

 Important Safety Information

A new, free smart phone app, called LSU SHIELD, is now available to the LSU community. Available for both iOS and Android operating systems, LSU SHIELD is designed to help students, faculty and staff report emergencies or crimes, receive help from police, or simply check on each other to ensure they've arrived safely at their destinations or returned safely from class, their workouts, or other outings.

1. If you see something, say something:
If you see something suspicious on campus, please report it! We want to hear from you, and you can even report suspicious behavior anonymously. Call LSU Police at 225-578-3231 or learn more.

2. Bookmark LSU's homepage:
Everything from safety messages and severe weather alerts to what's happening around campus can be found at LSU's homepage.

3. Safety messages from the LSU Police Department:
Stay informed of campus safety issues by visiting the LSU Police Department's website and liking LSU PD's Facebook page. To reach LSU PD by phone, dial 225-578-3231 or if it's an emergency, dial 911.

4. Don't Be a Zombie:
Use caution walking and driving on campus, especially in crosswalks. More information!

5. Take a shuttle at night:
Instead of walking around campus at night, take LSU's free shuttle known as Campus Transit

6. Emergency Text Messages from LSU
Your students should make sure that they have registered their personal cell-phones with the Emergency Text Messaging System. Students can register via their myLSU account. Only faculty, staff, and students will receive an emergency text message in case of an immediate safety issue on campus.
