As the aggressive spread of COVID-19 prompts detailed planning across our campus and across the country writ large, I have been struck by much of the emerging rhetoric connected to border control and the foreign origins of this threat (while not inaccurate) and its disturbing parallel with the xenophobic and nativist bombast that was commonplace in the United States in the early years of the 20th century.
Congratulations to four CASL faculty members receiving the university's Distinguished Awards!
Distinguished Teaching Award: Patricia Smith, Professor of Economics
Distinguished Research Award: Jorge González del Pozo, Professor of Spanish
Distinguished Service Award: Lisa Martin, Associate Professor of College-Wide Programs
Collegiate Lectureship: David Sobiechowski, Lecturer II in Economics
CASL faculty, students and alumni are involved in a variety of classes, research, activities and philanthropy, and are making an impact locally, regionally and nationally.
Your gifts to CASL support student success during and after their time at UM-Dearborn. With your help, CASL is able to offer students invaluable experiences in the classroom, out in the field, and around the world. Thank you for being an everyday hero for CASL students!
For example, Keviyan Richardson, a UM-Dearborn student majoring in urban and regional studies, is using what he learns in his classes to help guide him as he works to improve neighborhoods in his hometown of Detroit.
