WHAT TO EXPECT ON REGISTRATION DAY

Faculty and staff members, and seniors, are looking forward to greeting all students and families on August 27, Monday afternoon, from 2 to 5 PM. Registration activities will take about an hour and include returning fully completed paperwork, receiving information about/from the Academy Parent Council, meeting advisors, receiving schedules and studio block descriptions, having student photos taken, and locating lockers, mailboxes, and cubbies. Families of 8th-11th graders should arrive anywhere in the 2 to 5 PM time frame. Sixth and seventh grade families should plan to come to Registration at about 4:00, just prior to their back-to-school potluck picnic that will begin at 5:00 PM.

Meet our Senior Leaders at Registration

The Class of 2019 spent about 24 hours together earlier this week at the Mohawk Trail State Forest, preparing for their year ahead as senior leaders. A long-standing tradition, the seniors are charged with helping with the day-to-day functions of our school community, as well as creating our teams for the year (6th-12th grade groupings with faculty and staff that do chore together each day, share locker areas, prepare community suppers together, etc.).

This group of seniors is a fantastic bunch, and are more than ready to set the tone for an energetic and positive year. They'll kick all of that off on Registration Day, where they will be meeting their team members and helping to shepherd them through the Registration process, and providing some ice-breaker activities for the 6th & 7th grade potluck picnic that evening.

Bus Schedule for Next Week

Tuesday, August 28th is our first day of classes and practices for all after-school activities. Buses will depart at 5:15 PM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Friday, as noted in the Rafting Day information below, buses will depart at 4:45 PM.

School Materials, Book Lists, etc.

Please remember to double check the lists provided earlier in the summer in order to be prepared for the school year. The Academy will provide planners for all students. Additional school supply lists, by grade, can be found HERE on our website.

Upcoming Back-to-School-Potluck Picnics

Eighth grade students and families will gather at Conway Pond and tenth grade students will be hosted by the Mossman family, both from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday, August 26. For more information about the 8th grade picnic, please contact Class Parent and picnic organizer Karen Ferrandino. For information about the 10th grade picnic, please contact Melanie and Chris Mossman.

Sixth and seventh grade students and families will gather on campus right after Registration, from 5 to 7 PM. Please remember to bring a dish to share.

RAFTING DAY 2018: August 31

As is tradition, Academy students and faculty will head to Zoar Outdoor for a fun-filled day of whitewater rafting on the Deerfield River on Friday, August 31. Please make sure that you and your child have signed the release form that was sent out in the registration packet before Registration on Monday, August 27, so that it may be turned in at that time.

The following information is direct from Zoar:

WHAT TO EXPECT:  All guests will be required to wear a Zoar Outdoor-issued PFD (Personal Floatation Device) and helmet. You will also be provided with a paddle. This trip rafts a 10-mile section of class II and III whitewater on the Deerfield River.

WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING:  You are required to wear sneakers or other shoes that can be secured to your feet. Water shoes are fine, but no flip-flops or Crocs! In warm summer weather, some guests are comfortable in bathing suits/swim trunks or light layers. However, we ask you do not wear cotton, as it will keep you cold and wet throughout the trip. Wool and synthetic materials such as polypropylene, nylon, and fleece, are appropriate for cooler weather and water temperatures. Any exposed skin should be covered with waterproof sunscreen.

Wetsuits, splash jackets, and neoprene river booties are available if you need them. Expect everything you bring with you on the raft to get wet.
Students who need to wear glasses or sunglasses should come with Croakies, or some such eyewear retainer. Buses will run on a 4:45 PM departure schedule, arriving at their stops approximately 30 minutes earlier than they do when running on the 5:15 schedule.

IMPORTANT:  Please pack a lunch, including water and snacks. These will be transported to the lunch area along the river.

Contact Nora Bates Zale with any questions.

Updated School Year Calendar

Please note this updated calendar which reflects a small change in the drama performance dates.

Correction

We apologize for any confusion regarding the Registration Packet contents as described in last week's e-Bulletin. Schedules and Studio Block descriptions were not meant to be included in either the packets or the description thereof. Both will be available on Registration Day.
