The San Diego Imperial Geriatric Education Center is working to address care gaps and improve health outcomes for older adults, strengthen training of the geriatric workforce, and build age-friendly and dementia-friendly health systems and communities.

The Age Friendly Care and Education Collection is a curated online collection of educational, clinical, and research resources for educators, health professionals, learners, and others interested in improving care for older adults. This fully searchable collection includes citations and links to resources including geriatric competencies, clinical guidelines, education toolkits / modules, case studies, clinical tools, preceptor materials, patient and caregiver education materials, journal articles, videos, and more. The Age-Friendly Collection is part of the Minnesota Northstar GWEP, with several contributions to the collection by GWEPs from across the country!

Recently the work of several GWEPs from across the country was highlighted in a special supplement in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) |
JAGS, Volume 72, Supplement 3 is now live via Wiley Online Library.
The supplement issue was posted online July 31st, 2024, and free access is granted to subscribers and non-subscribers for three years – until July 31st, 2027
On August 1st, 2027, and onward, free access will be granted permanently/indefinitely to subscribers.

SPEAKER BIO: Paul Downey is the President and CEO of Serving Seniors, a nonprofit in San Diego that supports low-income and homeless older adults. Since 1995, Downey has led the organization in providing a nationally recognized model of care, including daily meal service (1.4 million meals annually), case management, and access to health and dental care through partnerships. In 2021, Downey led a pivotal study on senior homelessness in San Diego, which has influenced local

|
policy and community efforts. He holds key leadership roles, including co-chair of the San Diego County Elder Protection Council and chair of the Aging and Homelessness Committee for the Regional Task Force on Homelessness. Serving Seniors manages 529 affordable senior housing units, including the Harris Family Senior Residence. In January 2025, they will open a new 179-unit community in Clairemont. Downey has a journalism degree from San Diego State University and a nonprofit management certificate from Harvard Business School.

Understanding and Adapting to Personality and Behavior Changes

People with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can experience behavior and personality changes. Learn why these changes happen, what they mean, what you can do to address them, and how to handle your reactions using the IDEA! strategy. Co-presented with Ian Neel, MD, Medical Director, Geriatric Medicine Consult Service at Senior Behavioral Health, Associate Clinical Professor at UC San Diego Health.

Ian Neel, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine doctor who specializes in caring for older adults. He serves as medical director of the Geriatric Medicine Consult Service at Senior Behavioral Health at UC San Diego Health. Additionally he is the geriatric medicine consultant for UC San Diego’s Brain Health and Memory Disorders program. Dr. Neel completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine and a residency in internal medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also earned his medical degree. He is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. He has been selected by his peers in a survey for San Diego Magazine as one of San Diego’s Top Doctors for the past three years.

Although the grant funding for this program ended in September, many of the on-line resources created are still available! Please check them out if you have not already done so, including the Cognitive Health Assessment Implementation Guide, prior webinars, and the short legal training videos on YouTube available through the Medical-Legal Partnership!
