We are quickly approaching the end of the first quarter; as always, it has been a rich and invigorating beginning to our school year, and we have so much to share. National Merit 

Scholarship Program


Join us in congratulating 13 De La Salle students who earned National Merit Scholarship Program honors this fall. 
National Merit Semifinalist
De La Salle senior William Cumbelich was honored for his exceptional promise, and for placing in the top 16,000 scorers of more 1.6 million students that took the PSAT. He is now in position to earn one of 7,500 national scholarships.
National Merit Commended Students
In addition to William's selection as a semifinalist, De La Salle had 12 seniors that earned National Merit Commended Student status, placing in the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who took the PSAT. Those students are: Henry Baer, Rithik Castelino, Peter Christie, Charles Conrad, Aiden Guzman, Riley Hilt, Timothy Kostolansky, Connor Livingston, Joshua Manicakam, Cole Silva, Michael Wentworth Jr., and Dylan White. 

HOMECOMING WEEKEND

October 5 and 6
Friday, October 5 will mark the annual Homecoming football game for De La Salle, when it hosts Monte Vista at 7 p.m. Students are asked to wear either white or pink (in support of Breast Cancer Awareness) to the game on Friday night. 

The Homecoming Dance will be on Saturday, October 6. 
Juniors and seniors will have their dance at the De La Salle Hofmann Center. The freshman and sophomore dance will be held at Carondelet's Garaventa Center.

CEREAL DRIVE

Sept. 24 - Oct. 12


It's Crunch Time! The 18th Annual De La Salle Cereal Drive started September 24 and runs through October 12. Supporting the Contra Costa County Food Bank, all students are asked to donate a minimum of two boxes of cereal. 

This year our four classes are competing against each other. Please have your son register his boxes at the Parent Association table, in front of the bookstore, before school through October 12.

JUNIOR MASS OF UNITY

Sunday, October 21
10 a.m. (Hofmann Center)
Join us for the Junior Mass of Unity on October 21 at 10 a.m. This event is open to all juniors, their parents, and siblings. Mass will begin promptly at 10 a.m., in the Hofmann Center. Registration for this event will close on October 11 at 3 p.m.
ONE NIGHT ONLY
October 24, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

On October 24 the Visual and Performing Arts Department will host One Night Only, a behind-the-scenes interactive workshop at De La Salle for prospective Spartan students.
Students will rotate between visual art, music, and theatre art subjects. They'll create art, meet the teachers, and learn more about the school. We will display some of the art these students make at Open House on November 4.
PARENTS: While the students are participating in the art rotations, you are welcome to either drop off your son or stay and learn more about the school and the arts program from our guest speakers.
One Night Only begins with a welcome for students in the Theatre at 6 p.m., and concludes around 7:30 p.m.

LADOUCEUR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE CENTER
Through the creation of the Bob Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center, we aim to fulfill a bold vision for our students. This state-of-the-art fitness center will better educate the whole person – in mind, body, and spirit.
The new facility will include a training center, coaches' offices, a conference room, a locker room, team rooms, and Hall of Fame lobby and reception area. Please visit our APC Webpage for a video of the facility renderings and additional information about the project.

Upcoming events for the De La Salle Class of 2023 admissions process: 

  • Applications are available online at www.DLSHS.org.
  • The Spartan for a Day shadow program started on September 17, and runs through January 15. (availability is limited) 
  • One Night Only will be Wednesday, October 24 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Open House will be Sunday, November 4 from 10 a.m. to noon.

ATHLETICS
The 2018-19 Winter Sports Season is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 29, with tryouts for basketball, soccer, and wrestling. Students are asked to check their Schoology pages for tryout information.

CAMPUS MINISTRY


"In the light of faith, you see things quite differently." Saint John Baptist de La Salle 

Campus Ministry has been in full gear with liturgies and retreats. About 80 seniors have already participated in the Kairos retreat, and another 39 will be participating in the next one (Oct. 22). There are five more Senior Kairos retreats this academic year.

  • All freshmen will participate in an on-campus retreat on Wednesday, October 10 (8:05 a.m.-12:00 p.m.). The retreat is a community-building experience that welcomes students to the Spartan brotherhood at De La Salle.

  • October is the Most Holy Rosary Month. Fathers and sons will be spending special time together during the October 13-14 retreat at the Vallombrosa Center. CLICK HERE to register for the Father/Son Retreat. 

  • Seven De La Salle students will be participating in the Ven A Ver Immersion Program in Salinas, walking in the shoes of the poor and living a day in the life of a farm worker. The next two Ven A Ver will be in Los Angeles (Feb. 13-18) and in San Diego (March 18-23), with an application deadline of Nov. 9.

  • On Sunday, October 21, we will celebrate the Mass of Unity with the Class of 2020 (the juniors). We will also have two Junior Retreats in October (18 & 19), please REGISTER HERE.

DRIVER'S ED - QUARTER 2
Registration for Driver's Education classes for quarter two are available. Classes begin on Thursday, October 11. The cost for the driver's ed course is $150. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday during 7th period.

MOMS IN PRAYER
What if you could change the world - not just for today but also for generations to come?  Moms In Prayer (MIP) is a program where moms come together to pray, specifically and scripturally, for the lives of their children and their school.  We have a group exclusive to 
De La Salle and Carondelet that meets weekly, on Tuesday's from 9-10:15 a.m., at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Walnut Creek. Please join us for this powerful time of prayer and fellowship.
