From script to screen
In Owasso, Oklahoma, lies Cherokee Film Studios, dedicated to the vital mission of the Cherokee Nation Film Office: increasing the presence of Native Americans in every level of the film and television industries while creating opportunities for economic development and jobs. Two alumni of The University of Tulsa’s Kendall College of Arts & Sciences are diligently working to bring this vision to life.

| Transformative translation
Presidential Professor of English and Creative Writing Boris Dralyuk was recently awarded the National Book Critics Circle’s Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize for his translation of Grey Bees by Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov. Because translators have long gone underrecognized for their critical contributions to literature, this award “pushes [Dralyuk] to work even harder to bring a wide range of necessary voices into English.”

The past is a tool
The National Endowment for the Humanities recently awarded TU Professors Kristen Oertel and Lisa Cromer a $150,000 grant to establish a new minor in 2024. This academic program will study historical trauma to cultivate a deep understanding of American and world history by exploring how collective trauma and the responses to it have shaped society and institutional structures.

New opportunities through Cultures of the Americas Graduate Fellowship
This year, William “Billy” Smith, associate director of TU’s Helmerich Center for American Research at Gilcrease Museum, teamed up with Don James McLaughlin, assistant professor of English and a Duane King Faculty Fellow, to launch the Cultures of the Americas Graduate Fellowship. This program awarded three grants of $500 to TU graduate students to support their research on the Gilcrease holdings and participation in Helmerich Center programming.

| A&S students learn from policy experts in summer program
Kendall College of Arts & Sciences students Cecilia Gutierrez and Kyleigh Gutierrez recently participated in the Oklahoma Summer Policy Institute.
“Being surrounded by so many passionate and active change-makers was inspiring and also allowed me to catch a glimpse into the many different directions that I could take in my future career,” said Cecilia.
