Student Employee of the Year Awards
*NEW this year!*
Did you know… by the time of graduation, 80% of students at University of Puget Sound have worked on-campus through student employment? Our student employees directly contribute to the university’s success. Please help us in recognizing their important work by nominating them for these new Student Employee of the Year awards.
More details on the award criteria and nomination process can be found here. Please take some time to review the linked rubrics and nomination details on the webpage. To nominate your student(s), submit a letter that is detailed and includes specific examples of your student’s excellent performance.
Nominations are due on Friday, January 30th.
Annually, the National Student Employment Association (NSEA) operates a Student Employee of the Year recognition program. For the first time this year, University of Puget Sound will submit nominees for the national awards, but we need your help. Submit your nominations for Puget Sound's Student Employee of the Year today!

Shifting Perspective: Building a Neurodiverse-affirming Workplace
Traditional approaches to workplace culture and management often overlook the diverse ways people think, process information, and communicate. A neurodiversity-affirming workplace recognizes that different brains bring different strengths and invites us to get curious about how those differences show up in day-to-day work. Using a strengths-based lens rooted in the social model of disability, this session reframes common challenges (such as miscommunication, disengagement, or conflict) not as individual shortcomings, but as responses to environmental barriers. Participants will explore how to reduce those barriers and create conditions where neurodivergent and neurotypical employees alike feel valued, supported, and able to do their best work.
Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2-3:30 P.M | Tahoma Room, Thomas Hall
This professional development session is offered by Human Resources. Registration is not required, but it does help HR plan if you think you might attend. QUESTIONS? Email HR@pugetsound.edu.

Do students get paid sick leave?
Yes, they do! If a student needs to miss a scheduled work shift due to their own health needs or those of a family member, they can get paid for that time, up to the amount of paid leave they've accrued. Sick leave may be used to care for individual or family health needs, and for qualifying absences under the state’s Domestic Violence Leave Act.
Paid sick leave is accrued at a rate of one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every forty (40) reported work hours. Paid sick leave is accrued and can be used across all student employment jobs at the university. If a student has an unused balance of paid sick leave when their job ends, and they have not yet graduated, it will carry over year-to-year into future university employment as long as the student does not have a break in employment (i.e. leave of absence or study abroad) longer than 12 months.
Paid sick leave is counted towards total earnings in a job and included when calculating hours remaining in a student's earnings limit.
Also, please note that students are not authorized to work remotely, even as an alternative to staying home sick. Student staff are not eligible for telework.
For more information regarding paid sick leave, see the university’s sick leave policy.
How does a student enter sick leave on their timesheet?
For the date the student is recording sick leave, have them use the 'quantity' box towards the right side of the row instead of entering a time 'in' and time 'out' for that date. The quantity entered should never be greater than the number of hours the student had been scheduled to work on that day. They should then select the "SIC - Leave" time reporting code from the drop down menu and click submit.
Refer to payroll's Student Staff Timekeeping Instructions for more detailed guidance, if needed.

Grab a moment, wherever you can find it, to say hi and check in with your student staff members.
Ask your student staff: What can I (your supervisor) do to support your efforts to perform well and learn meaningful skills in this job?
BENEFIT: Students have an opportunity to reflect on the factors that contribute to their success. This is helpful to you as you provide support, and to them by providing space to articulate their needs.
As an added bonus, by asking what you can do to support your staff, you show student employees that you care about them and are invested in their success!
Follow up: Share with student staff the specific skills that you see them using and developing in their job.
BENEFIT: Sharing specific affirmation of skills and talent is powerful! You acknowledge the good work and growth of the students who are on your team, cultivate a feeling of purpose and meaning at work, and plant seeds for them to start thinking about their growth and where they might use these skills in other contexts in their lives.
