House passes bill to double paid parental leave for educators and state employees
The House of Representatives today passed HB 1010, a bill which doubles the amount of paid parental leave for state and school employees. The bill increases paid leave from three weeks to six weeks upon the birth, adoption, or placement in foster care of a child. Democrats and Republicans alike took to the well to speak for the legislation, which passed 153-11.
Bill to compensate student teachers
gets second hearing in the House
HB 148 is a GAE-supported bill to provide compensation for college students during their required student teaching internship. The bill was previously heard in the House Education Committee last week. The bill was moved to the House Higher Education Committee and was heard in that committee yesterday.

Bill would allow "aggrieved students" to sue their school system for failing to provide an adequate education
Rep. Mesha Mainor, R-Atlanta, has introduced HB 1262, a bill that would allow students and parents to sue their school system for failing to provide an "adequate" education. Mainor is a former Democrat who switched to the Republican Party last year after she was the only Democrat to vote for SB 233, the radical, private school voucher bill.
House Education Committee meets at 8 am tomorrow
The House Education Committee will meet tomorrow at 8 a.m. to hear three bills:
HB 597 is a bill that would give parents an estimated award under the Special Needs Voucher program and the right to appeal that determination.
The committee will also hear HB 1104, a bill that provides for voluntary mental health screenings in grades 6-12 for student athletes "when a school or school district has a policy which requires students who participate in extracurricular sports to have a physical examination."
The committee will also vote on HB 127 that would "require the State Board of Education to establish rules and regulations for local school system outreach efforts regarding the English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) program."
