A Mini-Conference for Connection and Learning
Thursday, March 27
9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
Tahoma Room (TMS 363)
(add to your calendar)
Supervisors play a pivotal role in shaping the on-campus employment experience for students, fostering their development, and helping them thrive in their roles. But we know supervising student staff can come with its own unique challenges: balancing productivity with mentorship, navigating diverse needs, and finding ways to connect day-to-day work with students’ broader personal growth and career goals.
Our annual Gathering of the Supervisors is a mini-conference designed to bring us together as collaborators on the practice of supervising and educating students in the workplace. This event is a chance to:
- Connect with fellow supervisors across campus to share ideas, insights, and support.
- Celebrate the invaluable work you do to guide and empower student employees.
-
Gain practical tools and strategies to address common supervisory challenges.
Enjoy a light brunch, meaningful discussions, and two interactive, solution-oriented workshops tailored to topics our supervisor community has been asking about:
- Embracing Neurodiversity in the Workplace
-
Building Career Readiness: Embedding Competencies into Student Employment
Session descriptions are available on our website. Whether you’re looking for fresh approaches to mentoring students or tools to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment, this event is for you.

Do students get paid sick leave?
Yes, they do! If a student needs to miss a scheduled work shift due to their own health needs or those of a family member, they can get paid for that time, up to the amount of paid leave they've accrued. Sick leave may be used to care for individual or family health needs, and for qualifying absences under the state’s Domestic Violence Leave Act.
Paid sick leave is accrued at a rate of one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every forty (40) reported work hours. Paid sick leave is accrued and can be used across all student employment jobs at the university. If a student has an unused balance of paid sick leave when their job ends, and they have not yet graduated, it will carry over year-to-year into future university employment as long as the student does not have a break in employment (i.e. leave of absence or study abroad) longer than 12 months.
Paid sick leave is counted towards total earnings in a job and included when calculating hours remaining in a student's earnings limit.
Also, please note that students are not authorized to work remotely, even as an alternative to staying home sick. Student staff are temporary, hourly employees and thus are not eligible for telework.
For more information regarding paid sick leave, see the university’s sick leave policy.
How does a student enter sick leave on their timesheet?
For the date the student is recording sick leave, have them use the 'quantity' box towards the right side of the row instead of entering a time 'in' and time 'out' for that date. The quantity entered should never be greater than the number of hours the student had been scheduled to work on that day. They should then select the "SIC - Leave" time reporting code from the drop down menu and click submit.
Refer to payroll's Student Staff Timekeeping Instructions for more detailed guidance, if needed.

Grab a moment, wherever you can find it, to say hi and check in with your student staff members.
Ask your student staff: What can I (your supervisor) do to support your efforts to perform well and learn meaningful skills in this job?
BENEFIT: Students have an opportunity to reflect on the factors that contribute to their success. This is helpful to you as you provide support, and to them by providing space to articulate their needs.
As an added bonus, by asking what you can do to support your staff, you show student employees that you care about them and are invested in their success!
Follow up: Share with student staff the specific skills that you see them using and developing in their job.
BENEFIT: Sharing specific affirmation of skills and talent is powerful! You acknowledge the good work and growth of the students who are on your team, cultivate a feeling of purpose and meaning at work, and plant seeds for them to start thinking about their growth and where they might use these skills in other contexts in their lives.
