Convocation with Speaker Judy Shepard
Tuesday, September 12 - 10:50-11:50 A.M. - WEST GYM

Our first all-school convocation of this school year is an opportunity to hear from a renowned speaker with a powerful story about facing hatred and meeting it with love in action. It’s also a significant piece of a dialogue that we will work to foster throughout this semester on a school-wide basis, on this very relevant topic.
Judy Shepard is the mother of Matthew Shepard, who was a college student when he was murdered in 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming, in an anti-gay hate crime. In response, Judy and her husband started the Matthew Shepard Foundation. You can learn more about Matthew’s story and the Foundation’s work here.
During the days prior to the September 12 convocation, students will view an introductory video and learn more about the background in their Religious Studies classes. Students who are not currently enrolled in Religious Studies will have opportunities to get this same information in the Efroymson Auditorium during any of the three PRTs on Monday, September 11.
At the convocation, Mrs. Shepard will address the school for 30-40 minutes, followed by an open question period for the students. At noon, Mrs. Shepard will have lunch and conversation with the cast of The Laramie Project, Brebeuf’s fall play, which is about the town in the aftermath of the crime. Our production of The Laramie Project will take place on October 27-28 in the Efroymson Auditorium, and tickets will be available online in early October.
In the days following the convocation, Religious Studies classes will again lead class discussions for students to process what they heard. And, on Tuesday, September 19, Brebeuf’s Gender & Sexuality Alliance student club will sponsor a Diversity Dialogue in the Efroymson Auditorium during period 4 (10:10-11:10 a.m.), which will give students a forum for further dialogue and learning on these issues.
We look forward to the entire community engaging in these opportunities and to put what we learn into action.
The altered schedule for this day is below.

BREBEUF JESUIT WILL ONCE AGAIN SERVE AS A HOST FOR THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS OF INDIANA'S EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER GAMES THIS SUNDAY

Brebeuf Jesuit is estatic to once again welcome the more than 2,100 Special Olympics athletes from across Indiana making the trip to Indianapolis for state-level competitions on September 10.
Delegations representing 48 Special Olympics county programs from across the state will participate in the organization’s annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Games, named in honor of the Special Olympics founder and 2017 Arthur Ashe Courage Award winner. A total of 2,126 athletes with intellectual disabilities are registered for one or more of the events.
The 2017 EKS Games begin Sunday, September 10 on our campus, where more than 1,600 athletes, coaches, and partners will take part in state competitions for volleyball, flag football, corn toss, and distance run/walk. Competition and other activities are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Approximately 400 Brebeuf Jesuit students will again volunteer at the event, led the Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT)—which annually works with Special Olympics Indiana staff to plan and execute all facets of the day.
“The student leaders at Brebeuf Jesuit are among the brightest and most dedicated group of volunteers that we have the pleasure of working with each year,” Special Olympics Indiana President and CEO Michael Furnish said. “Their commitment to serving Special Olympics athletes and providing them a fantastic experience through this event is remarkable—and we are, as always, incredibly grateful for their support.”

NOTES ON STUDENT DROPOFF AND PICKUP FOR PARENTS

To help to ensure that all are safe during our busiest times on campus, student dropoff and pickup, and to help make this time more efficient for everyone, some helpful guidelines are listed below.
Please DO
  • Drive Slowly!
  • Pull as far eastward as possible in the drive.
  • Pick up your student in the PickUp Zone (indicated by an orange cone).
  • After dropoff, please drive through the parking lot to turn around and head into the westward direction to exit.
Please Do Not:
  • Drop off your student in the center lane.
  • Make any type of U-turn. This includes pulling into a parking spot to turn around.
  • Ask your students to find your vehicle in the drive or near 86th Street
Brebeuf Jesuit is always happy to welcome you to campus for meetings or to pick up gear in the Spirit Store.  Please make sure to park in the Visitor Lot for these trips, as the numbered spots are reserved for faculty/staff.

social media and our students

Our news and our social media feeds often bring us a steady stream of division and conflict. At Brebeuf Jesuit, we are working to teach our students that they can aspire to something better - to a vision of unity and respect, based on our common humanity and shared values.
The world of social media today creates many opportunities for teachable moments for our students. Social media clearly has the ability to magnify the impact of what we do and say, both for good and for bad. That’s why at Brebeuf we don’t hesitate to intervene and get involved with what our students are doing on social media, when those teachable moments present themselves.
It begins with proactive education in multiple parts of the curriculum,  and with the guidance they hear from student leaders and from staff from Freshman Orientation day forward. It continues in the expectations of our faculty and coaches, in prayers and liturgies, and in classroom discussions and Diversity Dialogues, and All-School Convocations. Our goal is that the student culture at Brebeuf will be such that students know early on that “this is how we treat each other,” which includes online and otherwise.
As with anything else, students don’t always make the right decisions on social media. We treat anything that students put on social media as the school’s concern, because of the way it can impact others in the school community along with the student him- or herself.  We take this area of educational responsibility seriously, and diligently address the appropriate follow ups and necessary actions. We want students to continually be reminded of our expectations and to foster that support within families.
One thing that is gratifying is when students adopt these ideals as the standards to which they hold each other. It is also affirming when students ask us for help, because they know that we stand with them on making sure that the values of our community are upheld. Thankfully, this happens often because of the relationships that are built during students’ years here.
I want to thank you, as parents, for your support in this endeavor. Please know that you can always direct questions or concerns to Brenda Adams, Dean of Students, badams@brebeuf.org; or to myself at gvanslambrook@brebeuf.org; or to any other trusted faculty & staff member here at Brebeuf Jesuit.

Loves About Brebeuf
I love how kind everyone is at Brebeuf.  I know it is very stereotypical to say that, but coming from a public middle school i noticed a major difference in how people treated each other. This is also evident in relationships with teachers - I am good friends with several teachers at Brebeuf!
Class You Are Most Looking Forward to This Year
The class that I am most looking forward to this year is life skills with Mrs. Watko. In the past few years, I have focused on being book smart so I am excited to learn more practical skills that can be useful in real-life situations. Other than that, I am very excited for AP Biology and Honors Anatomy and Physiology.
Future Plans
I am planning on attending Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois next year and will be playing soccer. I want to be a surgeon, so I am planning on majoring in some form of science (probably biology) in college.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
National Honors Society
Conservation Club
2-year Admissions Ambassador
Random Facts
I have two sisters - both of whom attend the University of Colorado Boulder
Six or seven years ago, I saw the Dalai Lama when I was in Toronto for a vacation.  He was staying at our hotel and shook hands, including my sisters.
What are you most looking forward to during this school year?
I am hoping to lead a retreat this year. Senior privileges are also very exciting because I love all the options to eat around Brebeuf! I am also really looking forward to taking my classes to prepare me for college.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc.?
Believe it or not I actually do not watch Netflix because I don’t have much free time.  In the little free time I have I normally choose to spend it with friends.  I have tried to start several TV shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones but they just do not interest me.  However, if I do have time to watch a tv show I watch The Bachelor with my mom and dad and laugh at all the drama that the contestants make.
What advice would you offer our newest Braves in the Class of 2021?
I would suggest to make the most of your time at Brebeuf and to get to know everyone.  Four years goes by so fast, and every year I wish that I had taken the time earlier to get to know one of my current friends.

Tomorrow is Giving Day at Brebeuf Jesuit!

Tomorrow is Giving Day at Brebeuf Jesuit, the last day of our Philanthropy Week. On Giving Day, we celebrate two of the core components that are critical to our learning community – our rich tradition of educating men and women for others and the loyal, generous donors who bring that tradition to life. Today, we’re proud to feature one of our Giving Day donors, Larry Winters, Brebeuf Jesuit Class of 1991, proud parent of Ashlyn ’20, and Brebeuf Jesuit Alumni Board Member.
Your participation with the school has evolved over the years—you were a student, then an alumnus, now you are a parent to a current student, and an Alumni Board Member. What has changed over the years as your participation has changed?  What has remained the same?
My participation at Brebeuf has definitely evolved over the years.  Being a student and athlete is much different than being an alumnus, an Alumni Board Member, and now a parent of a current student.  As a student, success was all about you—getting good grades and representing Brebeuf.  Now, it’s about doing what’s necessary to help others be successful. One thing hasn’t changed—the desire and commitment from the teachers, staff, and community in seeing the students be successful.
Which role is your favorite?
Each role brings me joy! As a parent, it's wonderful to see my daughter benefit from all of the things that I was able to benefit from when I was a student at Brebeuf.  As an alumnus, it's awesome to have relationships with my classmates after 30 years and now see our kids attend Brebeuf.  As an Alumni Board Member, it's a privilege to help Brebeuf make decisions that will allow us to continue being successful as a college preparatory school.
What motivates you to give back?
It is inspiring to be a part of a community that strives to make people better in all aspects of life.  Many people made sacrifices for me to attend Brebeuf and I want to have the same impact on other students coming from similar backgrounds.
Why do you encourage others to give?
I encourage others to give because my education at Brebeuf had a lasting impact and shaped who I am today.  There are many students that would be a valued asset to the Brebeuf community but come from households that can't afford the tuition. Other people giving and sacrificing allowed me to attend Brebeuf. I want to do everything that I can to encourage others to give so that all students have the wonderful opportunities that I did.
We hope you’ll join the Giving Day celebration by making your gift to The Brebeuf Fund, then, tell us why you give.
