Why I Carry Water into the Desert: A Dedication to Father and Son
I wish I could paint for you the image of a father and son I hold as I prepare to join our First Unitarian delegation for Faith Floods The Desert. Next week, we will join UUs from across the country organized through Love Resists and No More Deaths/No Más Muertes to assert the right to save lives by stocking water caches for migrants walking north across the Arizona/Mexico border.
In so doing, we risk the same charges facing the nine No More Deaths activists who provide food and water in the desert. If charged, we will contest those charges and resist government repression of this life-saving work ...Continued

Now the Clean Up
The construction undertaken to make the chancel area more accessible while enhancing the aesthetics of the sanctuary is nearly complete. All that remains before the arrival of 250 UU musicians on August 1, for a three day conference followed by the congregation's regular worship on the 5th is the final cleaning of the construction activity. This will be a perfect opportunity to don rubber gloves, grab a bucket and rag and give the sanctuary a through cleaning now that the dust has literally settled. Please Sign the Immigrant Justice Petition at Coffee HourSunday, July 29, and Sunday, August 5 Measure 105 will be on the November ballot in Oregon. It will end the state's sanctuary law! Please sign the UU Oregon Voices for Justice Petition for the voter’s pamphlet statement. We need 600 signatures to publish a Unitarian Universalist statement opposing Measure 105. The petition will be available at the Immigrant Justice Action Group and the Economic Justice Action Group tables during social hours this Sunday, July 29 and next Sunday, August 5. Oregonians for Immigration Reform, an anti-immigrant organization, turned in enough signatures to qualify their measure for the November ballot. Measure 105 would throw out Oregon’s sanctuary state law, a law that has been working for over 30 years to protect Oregonians from unfair racial profiling. We need your help to power an inclusive, statewide campaign to defeat Measure 105. Here are some additional actions we ask that you take ASAP to mobilize your supporters to join the campaign to VOTE NO on Measure 105:

Forming a First Unitarian Delegation for Faith FloodsFirst Unitarian's Social Justice Director, Dana Buhl, and members of the Immigrant Justice Action Group (IJAG) will join the national religious witness called #FaithFloodstheDesert at the Arizona/Mexico border August 3–6. We are part of a larger delegation of UU Love Resists supporting the activism of No More Deaths / No Más Muertes. Together with humanitarian aid workers who provide food and water for migrants traversing the desert, we will continue to resist government repression of this life-saving work. This action affirms that no one is outside the circle of Love to which we are accountable. It is not a crime to cross borders. It is not a crime to provide life-sustaining humanitarian aid.
Ways to support this act of witness:
- Bring new wool or white cotton socks (no dyed cotton, please) to church Sunday, July 29 to the Immigrant Justice Action table in Fuller Hall. Socks help protect the feet of migrants crossing the harsh desert.
- Hold migrants and activists in your thoughts and prayers. This is an ongoing crisis with a need for the ongoing witness.
- Learn more about No Más Muertes/No More Deaths and the Faith Floods the Desert action.

Bookstore
Your bookstore has just received the newest meditation manual, “Love Like Thunder” by Jess Reynolds. The manual is just $8, as are all the other UUA Meditation Manuals in stock.
The bookstore is looking for a couple special volunteers willing to do the quiet shift during the second service.
The bookstore isn’t very busy during this time, but some congregants enjoy browsing when the bookstore isn’t crowded, and it gives the volunteer time to peruse our selection too!

Gentle Yoga in the Evening
A drop-in yoga class for those of all ages and abilities to build body, mind, spirit, and community. Learning Community Summer ProgramDuring the 9:15 a.m. service only, we offer drop-in programming for children ages 10 and younger following the Story for All Ages. Children ages 4 to 6 will gather in room A106 for the Caldecott Books series. Children ages 7 to 10 will gather in room A108 for Circle of Trees, a multigenerational program; parents, grandparents, and caregivers are encouraged to join. Please stop by the Info Desk in the Eliot Center hallway for more information. Childcare for ages 3 and under is always available during both services.

Causa is our July shared plate recipient. Causa works to improve the lives of Latino immigrants and their families in Oregon through advocacy, coalition building, leadership development, and civic engagement. It envisions a world where all people have the opportunities, and resources needed to thrive, and a community that welcomes and values the contributions, strengths, and assets of Latino immigrants and their families.
Causa is a member of One Oregon, the statewide immigrant and refugee coalition, and also supports the Oregon Immigration Resource that provides legal resources and Know Your Rights resources.
