Staff LEAD: Empowering Leaders Across TWU |
The inaugural Staff LEAD cohort is well into its leadership development journey, and the experience continues to demonstrate the value of learning together across TWU. Participants from a variety of roles and functions have explored leadership theory, personal discipline, motivation, systems thinking, social awareness, and empathy while bringing their own experiences and perspectives into the conversation. The cohort has also had the opportunity to learn directly from TWU leaders and special guests, including Chancellor Feyten, Dr. Becky Fredrickson,

Wandaliz Turner, and Aimee Laun. We extend a special thank you to the faculty, staff, and senior leaders who have shared their time and leadership journeys through coffee chats and other informal discussions.
Learning has extended beyond the classroom through an Action Learning Project focused on employee wellbeing, where participants are applying their knowledge to a real-world challenge and developing solutions through a systemic leadership lens.
Most of all, this cohort reminds us that leadership can happen at all levels. United by our shared purpose, each of us has the opportunity to lead from where we are, and leadership development helps prepare us for the pathways ahead. If you are interested in joining the next Staff LEAD cohort, please visit our website for information and upcoming opportunities. This program is supported by the generosity of the Jane Nelson Institute for Women's Leadership.

Learning Happens in the Moments That Matter |
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate about professional development is that some of our most meaningful learning happens when we’re in the middle of something we haven’t encountered before. There’s a problem that needs to be solved, a difficult conversation that needs to happen, or a decision that needs to be made, and suddenly, we have to figure it out. We don’t always get it right, but even our mistakes can teach us something. There can be value in the humility of realizing we could have handled something differently, and in asking someone else how they might approach it or watching someone with more experience navigate a similar situation.
For early-career managers especially, it’s important to remember that the people who seem to “knock it out of the park” often have years of experience (and years of mistakes, reflection, and learning behind them). It is unreasonable to expect yourself to develop every management skill overnight.
At the same time, we have more agency over our development than we sometimes realize. Self-directed learning tools like LinkedIn Learning can be an excellent supplement to real experience. Rather than simply accumulating courses in our spare time and hoping they become useful someday, we can use on-demand resources to explore a question, prepare for a challenge, or find a better path forward after we encounter something difficult. You can learn at your own pace, seek out perspectives from experienced professionals, and then bring that learning back into your work.
The courses below are a few popular places to start for newer managers, but think of them as just that: a starting point for building your own toolkit.
