Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse was my Eiffel Tower growing up. Living in Western New York, Cape Hatteras National Seashore represented our most far-flung family camping odyssey, a distant land of hush puppies, fiddler crabs, and sand dunes. When I learned my mother, sister, and brother were planning to return, I had to go. Here’s what I found.

The lighthouse was moved! The Outer Banks, aka the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” is home to some of the most roiling seas and shifting sands on the planet. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse stood 1,500 feet from the ocean when erected more than 150 years ago. This is not breaking news, but in 1999 the entire seven-structure Cape Hatteras Light Station was relocated 2,900 feet from its original base to escape the encroaching sea.

Carolina barbecue vs. Outer Banks seafood: I set a four-dinner goal for Carolina barbecue. But what about my love of seafood? A culinary conundrum, to be sure, so I compromised. I ordered baby back ribs at Rusty's Surf and Turf; at Watermen’s Bar & Grill, I tried Devon’s Carolina BBQ pork ribs. I put in for shrimp and crab cakes at Alex’s Shrimp Shack. On the final night my brother John, who once loathed seafood, surprised us by bringing a seafood boil from Austin’s South Island Seafood to our campsite at Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort. I never wavered in two choices: nightly servings of hush puppies and key lime pie!

Waves and wind: Not every Cape Hatteras memory is happy. I once tumbled uncontrollably beneath the surf when an unanticipated wave smacked me off my feet. My anxiety resurfaced among the cresting curls recently, but that didn’t dissuade me from a little body surfing. The same OBX wind that churns the ocean makes Pamlico Sound one of the best windsurfing spots on Earth. I passed on it last time, but now that my mom has requested a return for her ninetieth birthday in 2024, I might take a lesson from REAL Watersports. It looks too fun to pass up.
