In his director's letter, Edmund Malesky reflects on the world's failing report card on Sustainable Development Goals and how DCID is working to advance sustainable development.

Government officials and development practitioners from Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, Rwanda, Somalia and Nepal studied fiscal decentralization policy reform strategies through DCID's Fiscal Decentralization and Local Government Financial Management executive education program.

Marie McAuliffe, head of the Migration Research & Publications Division at the International Organization for Migration and editor of the World Migration Report, discussed the top transformations shaping migration and displacement - geopolitical, environmental and technological. Drawing from World Migration Report analyses, she discussed global trends and the complex dynamics of migration during DCID's first DevLab seminar of the year.

The Southeast Asia Research Group (SEAREG) Summer Conference, held at the City University of Hong Kong, featured research presentations from its newest class of SEAREG Fellows along with State of the Field and Region keynotes. The SEAREG program, based at DCID, will host its next conference Dec. 5-7 at Boston University.

The USAID Science for Development Institute, held at the Duke in DC office, focused on the intersections across science, technology, innovation and federal policies, programs, and activities in international development. Prof. Sarah Bermeo delivered a keynote during the two-day event.

In August, 20 students from 16 countries (Ethiopia, Bangladesh, South Korea, Paraguay, Nepal, Peru, Costa Rica, Uganda, Mexico, India, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Brazil, China, Armenia, Turkey) began their Duke MIDP journey. The cohort has an average of 9 years of work experience and represents a variety of professional fields, including government, development, peacebuilding, finance, nonprofit, entrepreneurship, energy and education. 

The Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center welcomed Class 23 of Rotary Peace Fellows - 11 students from 10 countries. Four of the fellows are in the Duke MIDP program.
