Incredible Dorado Tagging Day off Tropic Star Lodge
Epic Day off TSL
Three bulls and a cow schooling.  Saturday, Nov. 19th, 2022, off TSL.
We all have aspirations of a dream offshore fishing trip or an ideal day on the water.  Many anglers dream of an inshore or offshore grand slam, others about a big blue, sail, or black released with family.  For us, the dream day has always been to find a massive log and tag and release as many mahi as possible near that structure until we ran out of bait or daylight.  On Saturday, November 19th, 2022, that dream tagging day came true.  Click here or the image above to watch a short film about an incredibly impactful day in the field we will never forget.

During our recent expedition to Tropic Star Lodge, our tagging program deployed 162 conventional tags and 12 satellite tags.  This brings our TSL project total to 662 conventional tags and 31 satellite tags deployed.  In this article, we introduce our first geolocation track acquired from a 44" bull tagged last November as well as an ongoing analysis of the differences in vertical habitat utilization between dolphinfish monitored in the Western Central Atlantic versus Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean.  A special thanks goes out to the staff, captains, and mates of Tropic Star Lodge for their help with tagging and releasing 162 dolphinfish during the recent Annual Billfish Conservation tournament.  Click here to read more about this update.
For the angler or anglers in your family, purchase a Dolphinfish Research Program tag kit, shirt, golf towel, or hat, to help support and promote our tagging program's 2023 effort.  Click the banner above or here to purchase a stocking stuffer or holiday gift.
A new recapture of a dolphinfish at large for 44 days was reported in mid-November by a commercial fishermen.  Since 2021, the Sandman Fishing Team has accumulated 9 recaptures along the north coast of the Dominican Republic from a total of 134  releases (75 in 2021 and 59 in 2022).
In 2017, we founded the Beyond Our Shores Foundation (BOSF) to help grow and expand the Dolphinfish Research Program and additional research initiatives with offshore fisheries.  Over the past five years, BOSF has accomplished considerable program
expansion, and we need your support to continue. This past year, we distributed a record number of kits (500) and tags (6,753).  In addition, we had among the highest amount of vessel participation (147) in our 21-year history.  We also deployed 16 satellite tags, 12 acoustic tags, collected 350+ catch per unit effort trips, and 75 seafood reports.  Our work is consistently published in scientific manuscripts and referenced in domestic and international fishery management fora, and we need your support to continue.  We also need support to meet the rising cost of operations including postage, basic tagging kit supplies and equipment, and staff support to help manage our growing international tagging program.  Help us continue and expand in 2023. The ways to financially support our work are provided in this newsletter.  All donations to the Beyond Our Shores Foundation are tax-deductible.
Facebook, in conjunction with the Network For Good Donor Advised Fund (DAF), offers nonprofits tools to raise funds via social media.  We utilize these tools to help raise essential funds for our tagging program.  Funds raised through this campaign will go toward the acquisition of tags and kit supplies for our 2023 effort.  Help us reach our goal of $5,000 in this campaign.  Click the banner above or here to donate toward this campaign.  This campaign is also accessible via our FB and Instagram page (@tagdolphinfish).
