- Two teams from the Department of Natural Sciences have received significant grants from NIH. Associate Professor Dr. Zhi “Elena” Zhang and Assistant Professor Jie Fan are researching the brain to learn how head injuries impact one of our body’s most vital systems. And Associate Professor of Biology, Dr. Kalyan Kondapalli and Assistant Professor of Physics, Dr. Suvranta Tripathy are working on research titled "Elucidating the role of luminal pH in regulating phagosome transport” which has been awarded the NIH R16 grant!
- Associate Professor of Economics, Hans Czap's article “Slave trade, trust, and corruption” co-authored with Kanybek Nur-tegin was published in Oxford Development Studies. Based on the analysis of the micro-level data from 34 African nations the authors conclude that a higher level of personalized trust leads to more corruption, whereas a higher level of generalized trust leads to less corruption.
- Professor of English, Dr. J. Caitlin Finlayson published “The Afterlives of Thomas Middleton’s Civic Pageantry” in The Theatrical Legacy of Thomas Middleton, 1624–2024 (Routledge, 2024). Here, Finlayson explores the anomalous performance afterlives of London Renaissance playwright Middleton’s civic pageantry from 1913 to 2021.
- Associate Professor of Economics, Antonios Koumpias published the paper "Effects of property value assessment limit portability on migration outflows" with alum, Stuart DiDonato, in Public Budgeting & Finance. Stuart was a 2022 SURE participant.
- Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Production Adam Sekular's feature film, The Flamingo, had its world premiere at the prestigious Camden International Film Festival and was featured in Variety.

- Have you seen the latest volume of the Zine? Featuring student work and students as partners, the project is supported by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan, along with UM-Dearborn’s Hub for Teaching and Learning Resources, the Dean of Students, and the Department of Language, Culture and the Arts. Check it out!
- The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program is designed to guide undergraduate students in the practice of research and expose them to potential educational and research-oriented career paths. CASL had 28 research projects with students and CASL Faculty mentors, read more.

On September 30th, friends, colleagues, faculty, staff, family and friends joined to celebrate the life of esteemed member of the UM-Dearborn community, Dr. Bernie Klein.

To honor Bernie's memory, Bernie's family established a memorial fund at UM-Dearborn. The fund will support tuition, fees, books, research, conference travel, and other needs for CASL students to reflect Bernie's fondness for educating students.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 to endow the fund so it will exist in perpetuity. Wolverine Welcome Day brought a huge crowd to CASL!1,100 new UM-Dearborn students attended Wolverine Welcome Day to see their respective colleges, student organizations, and all the resources our campus has to offer.
Here in CASL, new students were welcomed by some of our brightest student ambassadors and they had the opportunity to meet the dean. CASL also had photo frames and a backdrop for photo opps, along with friendship bracelet making that encouraged students to make and trade in order to meet new people. Our Wishing Wall saw a lot of activity, where students wrote their wishes for their time at UM-Dearborn. Read more...

We have new program web pages!
Over the last eight months our university web team in external relations have worked tirelessly to design and launch new stream-lined program pages where prospective students can get all of the information they need regarding our degree offereings. CASL had over 85 programs to redesign, browse them here.
