Staying warm is becoming increasingly expensive. The average cost of home heating is projected to remain at near-record levels this winter after increases of roughly 17% last year, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). Heating unit inspections, energy audits, and smart thermostats are important ways reduce energy waste and save on heating. But there are several other low or no cost ideas too. The best temperature for your home in winter is 68 degrees, according to the DOE. Also, be sure to turn your heat down to about 64 degrees when you're away. Many homeowners may rely on fireplaces, space heaters, and electric blankets to keep warm in the winter. These types of secondary heating sources can help to slash costs and save energy since they offer heating to a more targeted area of your home. All of these options are also much safer than they used to be. So adjust your thermostat, grab your space heater, and stay warm.
