NOTEWORTHY

Arizona Educators Link with Legislators in the Classroom

In a professional arena garnished with ideas and creativity, some might say adapting preconceived and ready-made initiatives is taking the easy way out. However, when it comes to implementing the Take Your Legislator to School (TYLTS) program in Arizona during the 2014–2015 school year, that notion couldn’t be further from the truth.
The fledgling program, which was originally fueled by Bobbie O’Boyle, Executive Director of the Arizona Education Foundation (AEF), has required a substantial amount of preparation, time, energy and resources.

GOOD TO KNOW

Twitter Takes Professional Development to a New Tier

Free, convenient and voluntary are three words rarely used to describe high-quality professional development. When educators choose to participate in the Arizona K12 Center’s Ed Week…Every Week! program, the rare concept becomes a reality.
Through Twitter, the Arizona K12 Center provides educators the opportunity to discuss current events and pertinent articles. Regardless of location, educational professionals join together to discuss critical issues—just add Wi-Fi!

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

Alhambra’s Instructional Leaders Cultivate Curiosity on Campus

You can hear it in the tone of his voice. Alhambra High School Principal Claudio Coria is proud of the professional culture he has cultivated on his campus. Supported by a team of 18 instructional leaders, Coria said he wants to enhance the expectation accompanying the title ‘educator.’
In other schools and districts, ‘instructional leader’ is interchanged with ‘department chair.’ While the role often demands additional duties like ordering supplies and scheduling meetings, Coria asks more from his team of instructional leaders. He said he relies on these folks to be the hands and feet of the leadership evolution occurring on campus.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SPOTLIGHT

Thought Leader Series

Teachers must be at the table, or they’ll be on the menu! Our Thought Leader Series is a unique opportunity to engage in intimate and candid conversations with highly acknowledged leaders in educational instruction and policy. Led by Doctors David Berliner and Audrey Amrein-Beardsley, and other exemplary practitioners, we will dissect common myths, discover ways to implement policy in practice, think comprehensively about teacher evaluation and brainstorm methods for uplifting the teaching profession.
