Today, I am pleased to share a story that captures who we are as a university and where we are headed.
The Baltimore Banner recently featured Coppin State University in a front-page story highlighting our commitment to affordability, innovation, and student success. The article tells the story of how our decision to make higher education more accessible through the Expand Eagle Nation initiative and other affordability efforts is helping transform Coppin’s future.
This recognition builds on another recent national spotlight from Inside Higher Ed, which featured Coppin’s leadership in reducing non-tuition costs for students by lowering dining plan expenses and keeping mandatory fees flat. Together, these stories reinforce a simple truth: Coppin is leading the national conversation about making higher education more affordable and helping students graduate with less financial burden.
When I arrived at Coppin in 2020, we faced difficult realities. Enrollment had declined, financial challenges were significant, and many questioned what was possible for our university. Rather than accepting the status quo, we chose to think differently.
We made strategic investments across every facet of the university. We expanded opportunity. We reduced barriers to earning a college degree. And we challenged the idea that affordability and excellence cannot coexist.
Those decisions have positioned us to become a university of choice and the fastest-growing university in Greater Baltimore.
Today, Coppin is welcoming record numbers of prospective students, strengthening student success, expanding opportunities for learners from across the country, and continuing to prove that putting students first is not only the right thing to do—it is a sound strategy for building a stronger institution.
I am grateful to everyone across our university who has made this progress possible. Our faculty, staff, alumni, students, supporters, community partners, and First Lady have all played a role in this remarkable journey.

As we prepare to welcome another outstanding class of Eagles this fall, I remain confident that our best days are still ahead.
