December Digest

Here are some updates and upcoming migration and mobility events for this month.

Graduate Student Workshop

On Friday March 6, 2026, we will be holding a one-day workshop for NYU graduate students working on questions of migration and mobility. The workshop will create a space for emerging scholars to connect with one another, learn about each other’s work, and receive mentorship/guidance in professional development from faculty.

Additionally, the workshop will offer sessions on publishing in academic presses and journals, as well as a session on public communication about your research, with an emphasis on communication across different media (op-eds, podcasts, and film).

The deadline to apply is January 5, 2026. Please find the application here and feel free to share it with interested parties!

Note: The NYU Migration Network has limited funds to help support travel to NYC for those of you who are not currently in the NYU-metro area. This workshop is also available to recipients of the NYU Migration Network Graduate Student Summer Research Award who have graduated but who do not yet hold a tenure-track faculty position.

Escenas: Exhibition Closing & Reception

Join the Latinx Project on December 4, 2025 from 5-7pm for a closing celebration of Escenas. There will be a small reception and an opportunity to chat with the curators of the exhibition. Light bites and drinks will be served.

Steinhardt Workshop on Education and Immigration Research (SWEIR)

Join the closing out of the semester Graduate Student Research-in-Progress Workshop. The SWEIR workshop series aims to create an intellectual space where graduate students and faculty across Steinhardt and New York City who study immigration and education can come together, share work, and think collectively about how our scholarship can center and serve immigrant communities in this political moment.

Students are encouraged to sign up and share their works-in-progress. Work at various stages of development is encouraged. If you are interested in sharing, please fill out this form and RSVP by December 3rd to confirm your attendance.

Note: Space is limited to 20 participants (first come, first served), given the constraints of our space and to keep the conversation intimate. Confirmed attendees will receive a Google Calendar invite. Lunch wil be provided.

Post- (& Pre-) Crisis Planning: Understanding Urban Planning's Role in Conflict

Join DMAG and UPSA for an event discussing urban planning's relationship with conflict, genocide, and colonialism, with a special focus on Sudan and Palestine.
