| Greetings from the Director
| |
Happy New Year! Here at Yale, students are back on campus, and gray winter has descended over New Haven. As you can imagine, everyone is looking forward to spring – including the return of our reunion alumni!
With reunion gift committees in the 3s and 8s kicking into high gear, we’re continuing to highlight the four pillars of the for Humanity campaign with a special feature on Leaders for a Better World. Below, you will find information on the ways Yale is supporting talented students who will become tomorrow’s trailblazers: the artists, innovators, heads of government, and entrepreneurs who will have the training and insight to navigate complex problems to lead our world. The simple truth is that none of this would be possible without the hard work of dedicated alumni leaders like you who believe in Yale's mission.
I hope that many of you were able to attend Wednesday’s Reunion Giving Speaker Series, Beyond Access: Equal Opportunity to Thrive at Yale College, which focused on this important campaign pillar. If you missed it, a recording of the presentation will be available on the Reunion Giving Volunteer website in the coming week. And be sure to mark your calendars for our final two events in the series with The Yale School of the Environment: Knowledge and Leadership for a Sustainable Future on February 22, and Yale’s Investment in the Future Leaders of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health on March 8.

| In April 2022, Yale announced a $1.2 billion goal for student support as part of the $7 billion for Humanity campaign. Financial aid remains one of Yale’s highest priorities: 53% of the Class of 2026 receives need-based support, with the average scholarship at $66,362. For 2022-2023, the financial aid budget is $224.2 million for Yale College alone and $593.7 million for the entire university. The total cost of attending Yale this academic year is $84,525.
Yale is committed to providing resources for students of all backgrounds to ensure they thrive and excel at the university. From scholarships to mental health support, summer internships to emergency funds, alumni can have a direct impact on a Yale College student’s experience, which will sustain them far beyond their years on campus.

| For Public Health: A Broad Mission and a Way to Amplify Impact

For Yale College alumnus Gregory Hicks ’72, the School of Public Health wasn’t the obvious choice when he was considering a gift to Yale. However, after hearing about an opportunity to maximize impact at the school, he discovered that the work done at YSPH has profound connections to his own passions.

| Yale Students on the Move
| |
Last fall, five Yale seniors were among the 32 Americans who won Rhodes Scholarships to study at the University of Oxford next year. The following month, three Yale seniors won Marshall Scholarships for postgraduate studies at universities in the U.K. All of these recipients will further their academic training to become leaders in their respective fields.
But there are undergraduates leading at Yale right now. Shervin Dehmoubed, a Yale junior, was recently named to Forbes magazine’s annual “30 Under 30” list. He is co-founder and CEO of EcoPackables, a sustainable packaging company, which was also recognized with the Yale Center for Business and Environment’s (CBEY) Sabin Sustainable Venture Prize in 2021, as well as the first-ever Yale Innovators’ Prize. Veer Sangha, one of Yale’s Rhodes Scholars for 2023, is also the recipient of the American Heart Association’s Elizabeth Barrett-Connor Research Award for Early Career Investigators. His work has focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect cardiovascular disease in healthcare settings with limited resources.
These students are just a sampling of inspiring young leaders at Yale who have been able to flourish due to generations of support from alumni. We can’t wait to see what they do next.
