Dr. Serkan Ozel, a STEM education researcher from Bogazici University in Turkey, was PEER's featured guest for our most recent PB&J event. Across six projects conducted in collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and student organizations, Dr. Ozel's work uses unique STEM and problem-based learning opportunities to dismantle oppressive classroom practices in Turkey and build agency and empowerment within marginalized student groups.
Some of his projects include providing innovative curricula, educator professional development, and technology resources to underserved communities, connecting students to different cultures and historical narratives that are prevalent across Turkey, and facilitating student clubs that provide Romani students with activities, mentors, and resources to help combat educational inequities.
Through his work with NGOs, Dr. Ozel aims to bring awareness about the educational and societal inequities that plague students throughout Turkey in hopes of sparking systemic change.
