Book Drop in Your Library

July 10, July 24, and August 14
Join STAR Net and Twin Cities PBS for Book Drop, an exciting new children’s series that blends storytelling, animation, and real-world STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to engage curious minds ages 4–8. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the series is designed to ignite a passion for problem-solving and scientific thinking through the power of books and imagination.
This online workshop will be offered three different times over the summer (you only need to register for one). Participants will learn best practices on engaging youth in STEM through watching media and doing hands-on activities in their library programs. Attendees will receive the Book Drop Educator Guide and library kits that include materials to do the Book Drop activities and copies of the books featured in the show! Attendees agree to participate in brief evaluation surveys post-training and post-implementation.

Get Involved: Exoasteroids Projects

Billions of years from now, our Sun will collapse into a dense, planet-sized object called a white dwarf. Many white dwarfs we can observe today are surrounded by dusty disks, thought to be remnants of former planetary systems like ours. Finding these dusty white dwarfs can give us clues about the future of our solar system.

Help astronomers discover debris disks and asteroids around white dwarfs using images taken by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope. We call asteroids that orbit stars other than the Sun "exoasteroids." Join our search for exoasteroids around white dwarfs, planet-sized objects that represent the final evolutionary stage of Sun-like stars!

Flight Path Resources Blog Post

FLIGHT PATH, the first campaign in the Spark of Science@ My Library initiative, focused on the science of birds and bird migration. Free films – including two episodes from HHMI Tangled Bank Studios’ award-winning Wild Hope series, activities and educational resources will raise awareness about bird migration and offer suggestions for how communities can observe and protect birds during peak migration periods by doing things such as turning off lights and marking windows to prevent bird strikes.

by Luna Dara Kelondra, Guest Blogger
Creating fantasy maps has actually become quite popular. A simple Google search will yield countless results. There’s even open source software to help you create and illustrate a map on your computer. Here I will share a simple and fun way to create an imaginary world the old fashioned way, on paper, and fill it with geographical features and populate it with all manner of creatures and people. Your own imagination is the only limit to what you can add to your map,… and we all know there is no limit to the human imagination. Read more at the blog below.
