Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
|
We live in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where the most destructive earthquake in U.S. history occurred. Devastating earthquakes in our area are possible. Arkansas State wants you to know how to protect yourself during these potentially catastrophic events. Help us raise awareness by encouraging participation in the Great Central US ShakeOut earthquake drill (ShakeOut.org/CentralUS) on Oct. 18, 2018.
The drill is set for 10:18 a.m., Oct. 18 across our New Madrid Seismic Zone region. At that time, we encourage everyone to practice the national earthquake protocol: "Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”
|
- DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
- COVER your head and neck with your arms and seek additional shelter by getting under a sturdy desk or table if nearby; and
- HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
| |
If there is no table or desk near you, drop to the ground and then if possible get next to an interior wall of the room. Be in a crawling position to protect your vital organs and be ready to move if necessary, and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Do not move to another location or run outside.
Arkansas State is participating in the national ShakeOut, and we are asking each of you to take your #ShakeOutSelfie from your covered location during the drill and post it on social media. Don’t forget to also tag A-State (@ArkansasState) with the #ShakeOutSelfie hashtag.
If you or your class can’t participate at 10:18 a.m. on Oct. 18, drills can be held at other times if better suited for class schedules. A ShakeOut instructional guide and four-slide PowerPoint presentation for use by instructors in their classes and laboratories are available at AState.edu/ShakeOut.
Your department may also choose to practice other emergency response activities. For preparedness information and resources specific to Arkansas State University, visit AState.edu/Emergency-Procedures. Any questions or concerns about participating or lessons learned from the drill and follow-up discussions can be forwarded to A-State Safety Officer Jon Carvell at jcarvell@AState.edu.
