In the Spotlight: Dolores Barr, Blount County Public Library
Dolores Barr
With its local R.E.A.D.S. circulation exceeding 152,000 this last year, Blount County residents clearly appreciate the service. Meet a very active user - Dolores Barr. Dolores has returned to her hometown of Maryville after living and working in Maryland for close to 45 years where she was a teacher of business education and computer information systems at Prince George’s Community College.
With her background, she was comfortable with technology but never thought she would read novels in a digital format. To her, that sounded bizarre. She saw a poster for classes at the library promoting the use of R.E.A.D.S., and after she attended and received instructions, she was hooked.
Dolores likes to browse the book section in her newspaper, marking her favorites and then turns to R.E.A.D.S. to see what is available. Dolores says without the listings from the newspaper, she can spend hours scrolling and searching for titles in R.E.A.D.S.
Dolores has always been a reader and since moving back to Maryville she has been very pleased with the Blount County Public Library – its collections and services – and certainly continues to check out from the local collection as well as pursuing e-books through R.E.A.D.S. However, she likes the fact that with R.E.A.D.S that she can enlarge the print to a more readable size if she chooses. Another advantage for Dolores in reading e-books is that there is no evidence of the habits of a prior reader. An e-book is delivered to your device clean – with no residual cigarette smell or with no crumbs spilling from its pages.
She loves a good mystery or romance, and her favorite authors include John Grisham, Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb, John Sandford and James Patterson. Dolores may have started using R.E.A.D.S. for informational purposes, but now she says, “I read for pleasure - absolutely” and often finds her reading pleasure through the R.E.A.D.S. collection.
