Nurturing Your Practice
From the Editors
We have a lot of fears about growing our practices. The challenge is always in finding a balance that serves not only your professional but also life goals and figuring out what clients inspire you and what clients drain you. This issue has articles and interviews that address these topics and will help you gain clarity on how to build a successful and sustainable practice, while nurturing you.
Chrish Kresge interviewed her coach Amy Musson, who will give you an idea of how coaching is done and what are the benefits. In her interview, Allison Rapp talks about her new book Nurture that will help you connect with your clients using email. Angela McMillan talks about how to find new clients online and Marsha Novak focuses on how to conduct that first initial session that will lead to long-term client relationships.
Happy Practice Building to you!

To Nurture Your Practice … Nurture Your Clients
| |
Photo by Vero Photoart on Unsplash
By Marsha Novak, GCFPCM With the idea of nurturing a practice, I suspect the first thing that comes to mind for many is attracting new clients. For this article I chose to focus on something I find equally important – nurturing the clients who actually make appointments. My focus will be mostly on Functional Integration® 1-on-1 clients as that has been more the focus of my 18+ year-old practice.
As with all things “Feldy” there is no one size fits all. That being said I would like you to contemplate this … would you rather see ten different clients for one session, not to have them return, or one client who chooses to return ten times? Yes, this might be an oversimplification, and your answer might be in the middle. Still, this a question worth considering.
My own practice history has definitely leaned toward the “client retention” side of the equation. Several years back I recall hearing that, though not my personal experience, it is quite common for folks to come to an initial private Feldenkrais® session only to decide it is not for them. This has rarely happened to me. When it has, looking back I see I failed at what I share below. Successful initial visits are key to client retention and I will devote a large part of this article to those.
So, what has worked for me in the initial sessions? (...)

Is The Feldenkrais Method a spiritual Practice, and was Moshe a spiritual man?
Presented by Robbie Ofir, Feldenkrais® Trainer, PhD PT
with Larry Goldfarb, teaching the “Prayer Lesson”
Moshe prided himself on searching and finding concrete answers to how things work, in particular human function. However, he drew in his talks on many aspects of spiritual teaching – from the Baal Shem Tov to Gurdjieff. Was it paradoxical or an elusively obvious process?
We’ll weave through the ambiguity of what we mean by Spiritual and try to clarify with movement, thinking, feeling and sensation the answer in the best we can to the question, “Was Moshe a spiritual man and is the Feldenkrais Method a spiritual practice?”
