There is a lot happening at Hockaday! I would like to share a glimpse of Hockaday campus life and provide a few important reminders.
This month in the Lower School, the girls in prekindergarten are learning about perseverance which is a part of the Hockaday Pledge in Lower School. Our first graders are discussing penguins via Skype with educators and researchers in Antarctica while they work on dioramas of their favorite animal that lives in the Arctic. They will then design and print a 3D model. Our annual Middle School Holiday Bazaar raised a record-breaking $6000, in only forty-five minutes, which will re-invigorate a student courtyard at the newly relocated Thomas Jefferson High School. As part of our Institute for Social Impact program, Hockaday students have worked with Thomas Jefferson High School and most recently Home Depot on this project. While supporting those displaced by the October storms, students are mastering the design thinking process and they are inspired to make an impact on the Dallas community. Tomorrow, the entire school community will enjoy a meaningful morning program honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and participate in a variety of service projects and #OneHockaday programs in the afternoon. All funds will go to support Paper for Water. Follow us on Facebook to learn more.
Enacting positive change is at the forefront of our students’ minds. In our Social Impact classes, Form II girls are writing a research paper and one student was so inspired, she recently hosted a climate change rally on campus. Our students are partnering with DISD schools in myriad ways. In our Microbiology of Public Health class Hockaday girls taught students at a local DISD school about hygiene to prevent sickness. The Upper School Integrated Math Class is helping connect algebra concepts to the real world in local schools after piloting a similar program on our playground with our Lower School girls. Students are experimenting in the classroom with a TED Talks type structure which is new and invigorating for both the girls and the faculty. Follow @HockadayImpact to learn more.
Beyond Social Impact activities, our Upper School girls have been busy. They recently opened a new ceramics exhibit, they are beginning to select courses for next year, they are building sets and rehearsing for the Upper School musical, and they are cheering on their friends, nine of whom placed in the top three at the annual Metroplex Math Competition at the Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth. There are always exciting things happening at Hockaday.
We want to remind you that the application deadline is approaching on Monday, January 27. Please note, all testing and interviews should be scheduled by January 27, even if they will not be completed at that time.
Due to the high volume of paperwork coming into the Office of Admission this week and next, we ask that you please not contact our office at this time to ask whether your daughter’s file is complete. Instead, please wait until the week of February 3 for the Office of Admission to confirm receipt of all required documents. If an application is incomplete, we will email you to specify what we are missing. Rest assured, your daughter’s application will not be negatively affected during this time.
Feel free to login to the parent portal below to track your application progress and review your checklist.
All my best,
Maryanna Phipps
Director of Admission and Enrollment Management

On Sunday, prospective students and families enjoyed the fifth annual Diversity and Inclusion Panel Discussion and Reception where they heard from current parents, students, alumnae, and administrators about life in the Hockaday community. Our Director of Inclusion and Community, Tresa Wilson shared that Hockaday defines diversity as a wide-range of human characteristics used to mark or identify individual and group identities. These characteristics include, but are not limited to, ethnicity, race, national origin, age, beliefs, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, and ability. Inclusion means encompassing all; taking every individual’s experience and identity into account. At Hockaday, we want to foster a community where all feel accepted, safe, empowered, supported, and affirmed. We know that the diversity of our community makes us stronger and our goal is to include all and give all an equal voice.

Last week, Dr. Kelly Jameson spoke to our parents about the importance of setting boundaries for Children, Tweens and Teens. Every month, guest speakers come to campus to engage in conversations with our parents, faculty, and students about relevant social, emotional, and educational topics.

Driven by our mission to develop resilient, confident women who are educated and inspired to lead lives of purpose and impact, Hockaday’s philosophy and culture supports boarders so they can discover their talents and explore leadership opportunities, both at School and outside the classroom in the community. Hockaday is committed to creating an extraordinary student experience – one that is empowering, joyful, and nurtures the well-being and success of every student. Learning in a boarding community allows our girls to tap into their strengths, learn from their challenges, and develop the resilience they need. Interested in Boarding? Join us for our Boarder Visit on January 23 and 24.

In Lower School, girls are excited to try new things and take risks with the support of their teachers and peers. Girls in Middle School find an inclusive environment with friends, teachers, and advisors who are not only focused on student academic engagement, but also on their social and emotional development. Once in Upper School, girls continue to trust their abilities and enjoy the freedom to share ideas and take on new challenges. They are encouraged to find their voices and are supported by strong role models and inspired by their peers. No matter their age, Hockaday girls find confidence and strength, and they acquire and enhance the skills they need to lead lives of purpose and impact.
