Message from the Chancellor

Dear Colleagues:

At today’s ASU Board of Trustees meeting, the Huron Group is presenting the findings and recommendations of the efficiency study that the Board commissioned. I am providing you with a copy of the slides that are being shared with the Board. As you know, the decision to conduct an efficiency study was made long before we knew about our current ~$4M budget shortfall. I would not want anyone to conflate the call for an efficiency study with our current efforts to manage this year’s budget.

Please keep in mind that these slides are a summary of the entire report. There are far more details in the full report that we will share with the campus as we approach our town hall meeting later this month.

As you read through the slides, you will notice that Huron has identified several issues that our campus has already begun to address, most notably the financial impact of poor retention, and our need to reconsider some of our recruiting strategies. The completion of the report is fortuitous, in that it will provide the starting point for our strategic planning initiative, which we plan to begin later this spring. With the Huron report in hand, we can better define our shared future.

There are many recommendations in the study that specifically address A-State operations. Because our campus embraces the value of shared governance, it will be up to you to determine which of these recommendations we will adopt, and the timeline for making any changes. It is reassuring to note that Huron believes our operations are lean, and that there are no recommendations to eliminate faculty or staff lines that are currently filled.

I am sure you will have questions about the implications of the study for our campus. The discussion about where we go next with these recommendations begins with the town hall meeting that I scheduled for our campus next Tuesday, March 13 at 4 p.m. in the Union Auditorium. I will spend some time highlighting what I see as opportunities for us, and then open the floor up to Q&A. I have asked Dr. Welch to be there with me to answer any questions that you have for him.

If you watched this month’s First Friday video, you heard me say that while these are challenging times, Arkansas State has a tradition of rising to the occasion. We thrive and succeed when we work together as one team - as one pack. I believe we have the opportunity to combine some of the recommendations in this report with the innovative spirit of our faculty and staff to ensure a stronger future for Arkansas State University.

Kelly
