ARC Speaker Series: Jamey Ellis of Sadhana Forest
Join us for an ARC Speaker Series event featuring Jamey Ellis of Sadhana Forest. Sadhana Forest is a community/volunteer organization with locations in India, Haiti, and Kenya. The community practices veganism, inclusiveness of all people, and sustainable living. Their goal is to introduce people to sustainable living, food security through ecological transformation and wasteland reclamation, and veganism. Their work includes preserving local knowledge in relation to safe-keeping of the land, and they receive over 1,000 international volunteers a year from all walks of life.
For the last 7 years, Jamey has been director of the India location, and before that, he helped found the community in Haiti. Jamey will speak about the work of Sadhana Forest with an emphasis on helping individuals reinforce or deepen their relationship with the concept of veganism, and how to communicate that to others in a peaceful and successful way. Refreshments will be served after the talk. When: Saturday, April 3, 10:00 a.m. to noon. Where: Lake Hiawatha Park Building, 2710 E 44th St., Minneapolis. RSVP at Vegan Meetup.

And the Hotdish Winners are ...
Fun times and great food were enjoyed by all at our Fourth Annual Vegan Hotdish Cookoff. This year's winners were Judges Choice Mary Montoya (a two time winner) with Zen Pizza Hotdish and Audience Favorite Sadie Schrader with Fresh Veggie Casserole
. Sadie also won for Best Church Lady Attire. Mary and Sadie each received a casserole with their winning titles etched on the casserole lid. Thanks to all our contestants; every dish was a winner! And thanks to our judges, Megan Duke, 2015 Audience Favorite winner, Unny Nambudiripad from Compassionate Action for Animals, and Arwyn and Teresa of Glam Doll Donuts. This event continues to be a great way to reach people interested in plant-based eating. We loved this comment from Blake: "My first vegan experience. It was great and I liked all the food I sampled. Going to keep at it :)"

Huge shout out to Dan, Mike, Larissa, and Eli who handed out over 500 pieces of literature about veganism and farmed animals after the Fall Out Boy concert at Xcel. We didn't get a photo of the leafleting, but instead, here's a photo of volunteer extraordinaire Dan at the Hotdish Cookoff.

Did You Know: The Shrine Circus
Shriner's groups across the country contract with various circus producers to hold circuses on behalf of the Shrine. These circuses are fundraisers for the fraternal group and proceeds from the circuses often benefit Shrine temple operations only. Tickets may acknowledge in small print that proceeds do not benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children and ticket purchases are not deductible as charitable contributions, but the myth persists that attending these circuses keeps Shriners Hospitals for Children in business .
A 2007 New York Times investigation "In Shriner Spending, a Blurry Line of Giving" found that "Only 2 percent of the Shrine hospitals' operating income comes from money raised by Shrine temples and members' dues. The bulk is supplied by the hospitals' $9 billion endowment." So don't be misled by well meaning folks who tell you that going to the circus will help sick kids.
Join ARC and Minnesota Animal Liberation in protesting the Osman Shrine Circus at the State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. Days/times are 4/1, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; 4/2, 1:30-2:30 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m.; and 4/3, noon-1:00 p.m.. There is free parking inside the fairgrounds, follow the signs in from the Snelling entrance. Meet across the street (Judson) from the front of the coliseum.
