A Special Friday at The Academy

This morning, in a town meeting format, students completed the process of choosing team name themes for the year. Ultimately, the individual teams chose their names. Here, our school community is gathered in the midst of deliberations. The categories chosen are Mythological Beasties, Types of Pasta, and Things You'd Say to a Congressperson or Puppy! Ask your child(ren) to tell you about the process. From here, we all boarded buses on our way to spend the rest of the day rafting on the river with Zoar Outdoor.

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HATE

Without knowing it, when Senior Patrick O quoted from Martin Luther King, Jr. for our Thought for the Day on Wednesday morning, it was a fitting way to begin a day that ended with grade level conversations seeking to engage young people in the aftermath of hate. Organized by Mrs. Bates Zale, and using a lesson provided by the Anti Defamation League, students discussed different ways in which hate is evident and how it escalates. Here, the "pyramid of hate", with examples of each as provided by the 9th and 10th grade.

How Faculty Members Spent Their Summer

At The Academy, we are all students, and this idea rings true with our faculty. This summer, faculty read How We Learn: The Surprising Truth about When, Where, and Why It Happens by Benedict Carey and Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Peter C Brown and came together to discuss these topics during their August staff days. Teachers were joined by Dr. Nate Kornell from Williams College to discuss his research, as they engaged in lively conversation about effective study techniques, different assessment practices, and the importance of challenge in the learning process.

BING ARTS CENTER RECEPTION FEATURES MURAL CREATED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MR. GREEN and PRIYA GREEN

Andrae and Priya Green invite members of The Academy community to an event marking the end of a summer program that they led. Working with some fantastic students (including our own Isadora B, ’19) they created a large-scale mural, Like a Splinter in Your Mind, that will be revealed at a reception at the Bing Arts Center (716 Sumner Avenue in Springfield) on Saturday, September 9th, 5-8 PM. This family-friendly event features local music and food. For more information, contact Mr. Green.

CUBA TRIP REMINDER

Please remember to send in your deposits, signed waivers, passport and health insurance information by September 8 in order to confirm your participation in our Spring Break Cultural Exploration of Cuba. As a reminder, the trip will be March 12 - 20. Students, families, faculty and staff are welcome to join us.  A sample itinerary can be found here. NEWS FROM THE ACADEMY PARENTS COUNCIL (APC)

FROM APC CO-CHAIRS PAUL CATANZARO AND DIANE BIGELOW:
It was great to see most of you on Registration Day, and we’re grateful to those who were able to complete our brief volunteer survey. If you did not have an opportunity to do so then, please take a few minutes to let us know how you can support The Academy this year by completing it now. Click here to do so.

CORNUCOPIA AUCTION AND SOCIAL

We’re pleased that so many of you purchased auction tickets in advance.  You can still "buy two and get one free" so you can bring a friend!  This event is a wonderful social evening for adults, a terrific opportunity to do some holiday shopping, and a great way to benefit Academy financial aid and programs.  You can purchase tickets online, or contact the Business Office to have them billed to your school account.
In order to make the event fresh and exciting each year we ask parents to suggest new donors to solicit. If you have ideas, please send them along to Phoebe Walker P17, 20. Phoebe is also happy to answer general questions about the event and let you know how you can get involved.
