The year 2023 was a busy one at CHKD. We got a new President and CEO, Amy Sampson, a new Chief Clinical Operations Officer, Christopher Foley, MD, and other new clinical and administrative leaders. We offered historically significant gene therapies for chronic illnesses and continued to grow our mental health program. Surgeons performed more than 13,000 cases at our Surgery Centers. Children made more than 213,000 visits to our specialty clinics, more than 106,000 visits to our urgent care centers, and more than 63,000 visits to our emergency department.
Thank you for your referrals and trust in CHKD as we collaborate to provide the best possible care to your patients.
Happy New Year, and thank you for all that you do!

Diagnosing Eczema in Skin of Color
While the appearance of atopic dermatitis varies with different skin tones and morphologies, medical literature almost exclusively depicts skin conditions on white skin. Research has shown that due to this knowledge gap, the severity of atopic dermatits in patients with skin of color is underestimated, leading to undertreatment. When pediatric allergist and immunologist Dr. Kelly Maples, who practices at CHKD, noticed this gap in care, she made it her mission to reduce it in order to improve patient care.

|
In pursuit of this mission, Dr. Maples, who serves the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) as Chair of the Dermatology Committee as well as Treasurer, began requiring presenters to include images of disease presentation on skin of all colors. With a generous grant from Pfizer and the support of ACAAI and the Allergy and Asthma Network, Dr. Maples also developed EczemaInSkinOfColor.org, a free resource for both patients and providers to understand the presentation of eczema on different skin colors.
Dr. Maples will present on atopic dermatitis in skin of color during a free webinar on Tuesday, February 20, at 4 p.m.

Food Allergies on the Rise
Dr. Angela Duff Hogan recently discussed the rise of food allergies during an interview with WAVY News 10. During the interview, Dr. Hogan explains how the “Dual Hypothesis Theory” helps us understand how allergies form and why it is recommended to introduce common allergens to infants between 4 and 6 months to reduce their risk of developing severe allergies.

Karen Mitchell to Retire After Over 20 Years
CHKD Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer Karen Mitchell is retiring on January 5, 2024.
Karen has been an integral part of CHKD for more than two decades. After working in multiple areas of the hospital, including hematology/oncology and clinical research, and for the past eight years as Chief Nursing Officer, Karen has left an indelible imprint on everyone she has worked with.
While we are very excited for her to begin her next adventure and spend more time with her beloved grandchildren, we will miss her terribly for the guidance she has given us as a leader, mentor, and advocate.
