| Former U.S. Rep. John D. Dingell and University of Michigan-Dearborn have announced a partnership that will bring Dingell to campus to inspire the next generation of civic leaders. In Dean Hershock's most recent blog, " From the Hill to the CASL," he reflects on this new partnership and how it will provide faculty and students with unparalleled opportunities to work with Dingell to understand, document and share his legacy as the longest-serving member in the history of the U.S. Congress.

| Follow your passion or pursue a major with more traditional marketability in today’s job market? The question is a familiar one for many liberal arts students—as well as their parents. University of Michigan-Dearborn administrators say the university’s new business studies major (BSM), available only to CASL students as a second major, will allow students to say “yes” to both passion and professional skills.

| For Ricky Lindsay, the story’s in the details.
“Journalism is covering an event, sure. But it’s important to tell the story behind the story,” said Lindsay, whose grandma would save him sections of the Monroe Evening News when he was a young child. “Anyone can tell you a score or what plays were run, but there is so much happening before, during and after a game. That’s the story I want to tell.”

| Faculty are concerned about the increasing amounts of college loan debt students are accumulating. Open-source educational resources (OER) could be an option to help alleviate some of the financial pressure, without sacrificing the quality of education.

| Professor Jacqueline Vansant carefully read a letter, the first of a series of 600 that sat in a basement for decades. She was in Amsterdam at the time—the same place as the young man who penned it nearly 70 years earlier. “He was describing the rows of bicycles and how the windows didn’t have curtains,” said Vansant, Professor of German. “Those were the same details that I noticed when I was there. I got chills.”

| When Will Clarkson was 5, he remembers watching Star Wars. But it wasn’t the light saber action that caught his attention—it was what came after the credits rolled: A documentary on the planets. “I remember being captivated by that documentary,” said Clarkson, astronomy assistant professor. “From that point, you could say I was hooked.”
