Meet Michelle, Volunteer Engagement Coordinator

Hello, my name is Michelle Abban, and I am very excited to be joining the LVCA team as the new Volunteer Engagement Coordinator.
I recently graduated from the University of Virginia in 2020 with a degree in Global Public Health. During my time at UVA, I was a part of an English learners program called VISAS that connected students with the international community at UVA. It was the highlight of my time at UVA as I built connections with people from all over the world. During my time, I learned more about the difficulty of learning a new language and the difference cross-cultural relationships can make. I am so happy to continue to be a part of a community that empowers people to learn English.
When I am not in the office, you can find me cooking Ghanaian food, dancing, and critically analyzing corny TV shows.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant Award

We are so grateful to be the recipient of a Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant this year! Their contribution will help us provide Digital Literacy support and training to our volunteers and students.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awards funding to organizations that provide direct services to adults in need of literacy assistance.

September New Tutor Training Dates

In September, we will continue to offer new tutor training online via Zoom. Volunteers who complete the training virtually can choose to tutor students in-person, online, or using a combination of methods.
Our student waitlist is growing, and we'd love to train new volunteers to help meet the needs of the adults who come to us for assistance. Becoming a volunteer tutor will enable you to make a profound difference in a person's life.
Our next training session will begin on September 8.
  • Wednesdays, 6:00–8:00 p.m.
  • September 8, 15, and 22

Local Buisness Owners Support LVCA Students through Friendly Competition, Wordplay!

Wordplay
Maxient Team Sponsors Aaron, Candice, and Adam compete
as The Walking Read at our Wordplay trivia event each year.
Wordplay, Charlottesville’s Live Trivia Game Show, usually raises $30,000 to support the learners at Literacy Volunteers. Wordplay is a team-based competition for people who love words, vocabulary, pop culture, history, literature, and showing off how smart they are. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we have not held Wordplay for the past two years.
“From the unique format and challenging trivia questions to the enthusiastic competitors and their costumes, it is always a fun night," says Candice Hark, Co-Founder of Maxient and Wordplay sponsor. "We would want to participate even if it were a standalone event, but the fact that it supports the important work of LVCA makes our company’s support an easy choice,” says Candice.
Through the generosity of Wordplay sponsors like Maxient and other donors throughout the year, LVCA helps area adults improve their lives by reaching their educational goals.
We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to the beautiful Paramount Theater for Wordplay 2022. Stay tuned for our spring date announcement coming this fall.
