January Newsletter 2022 Sean Yang Monsanto Baby on a Pillow Installation ARTIST BIO Sean Yang [Korean American, b.1979] is a Los Angeles-based artist who became a naturalized citizen of the United States. His art practice revolves around sculptural ceramics to mixed media works using multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary methods to investigate social and internal space. ARTIST STATEMENT In 2020 we all realized that there are more poisons in our lives than cyanide and arsenic. Toxic substances are found in our homes, our clothes, and our food, yet we seem to tolerate these harmful things being manufactured for our consumption. Even the tools I use for making art (such as pigments for glazes and finishes) require me to take precautions while working. Some ceramic pieces cannot be used for eating and drinking. In our homes we often find house plants that are deadly if eaten by pets or children. Our cars poison the air we breathe. We now check labels on our food for evidence that we are not ingesting chemicals or hormones that can be toxic. Today we can see the entire population of Flint, Michigan poisoned by the water in their homes. During the COVID-19 pandemic I watched toxic behavior from my fellow citizens such as racist or sexist attitudes that shape our society. Seeing our nation’s capitol being attacked by those who consider themselves patriots I witnessed poisonous behavior destroying the very place that patriots should protect. Clearly, these people have been “poisoned.” People do not become Proud Boys without toxic input. The art I have created for my solo exhibition at Tag Gallery reflects some of my thinking about the venomous world I live in. From toxic flowers to mindless “blockheads” or babies that are twisted from the poisons from their mothers. All of these things point to how ubiquitous poison is in our everyday lives. I am definitely ready to turn the page and start anew. My family suffered a great many losses during 2021 and I know that we are not alone. In the last days of December I allow myself to slow down and reflect but, with that not so subtle reminder, I am ready to step into the coming year with passion and courage. I hope to meet you there even if it has to be virtually. Please continue to make the world a better place with your creativity, expression of all feelings, and grace, and know that I am cheering you on all the way. Warmly, Shaney Watters JANUARY MEMBER MEETING:  JANUARY 8, 2022 Off the Wall Here’s the latest from the Exhibition Committee. It's 2022 and the Exhibition Committee hopes you and yours had a wonderful holiday and New Year's celebration. PSA’s 2022 exhibition calendar begins with the New Members Showcase during February. This online exhibition features all of the new members juried into PSA during 2021. For all of the new members, plan to submit a digital version of your portfolio of artwork presented at the new member screening along with your artist’s statement. A formal Call for Entries (CFE) will arrive in your email box soon.  For the entire membership, the 97th Annual Juried Exhibition opens May 1 at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank. The take-in and jury will be around the middle of March. The 97th Annual will also be presented online and have a full-color printed catalog. Late summer or early fall is when the Artist’s Choice Exhibition will open at Whites Fine Art Gallery in Montrose, along with an online version and a printed catalog. One or two additional exhibitions are currently in the planning stages. Hopefully both of these exhibitions will also be online and in a gallery with printed catalogs. There will be plenty of opportunities to exhibit your latest artwork during 2022 and the Exhibition Committee is looking forward to seeing everyone and your latest art soon. Volunteers will be needed for all of the additional gallery installations, receptions and take-ins during 2022, so please consider participating as a volunteer in addition to submitting your latest artwork.
