| Welcoming Our Newest LL.M. Students Youssef Ibrahim’s journey to the New York bar began almost 20 years ago, when he earned a law degree in his native Egypt. He was a general practitioner in Cairo before immigrating to the United States with his family and settling in Staten Island. Now, he is one of 30 students starting their Master of Laws (LL.M.) studies at St. John’s. Read all about the St. John’s Law LL.M. students joining us from near and far this fall.

| In the Media Congratulations to St. John's Law alumna and Cullen and Dykman LLP partner Jil Mazer-Marino '90 on her appointment as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

The Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription wall) spotlighted the work of St. John's Law alumna and Villanova Law Professor Michele Pistone '89, who created and launched Villanova Interdisciplinary Immigration Studies Training for Advocates, the first university-based, fully online program to train non-lawyer immigrant advocates.
Mission Driven From coast to coast, along roads, tracks, and trails and on shores, mountains, and treadmills, St. John’s Law alumni and friends ran (jogged, walked, and climbed) on a clear and crisp Halloween day in the virtual 5K Run for Racial Justice sponsored by the Law School Alumni Association’s Alumni of Color Chapter. Many thanks to our 279 participants, and to the generous donors who raised $2,751 towards diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at St. John’s Law.

Scholarly Work Professor Anita S. Krishnakumar presented her latest paper on SCOTUS statutory interpretation, "Cracking the Whole Code Rule," at a virtual faculty workshop hosted by the University of San Diego School of Law. The paper is forthcoming in the NYU Law Review.

Opinions With a focus on then- Supreme Court nominee Hon. Amy Coney Barrett, Professor Marc O. DeGirolami pens another think piece on originalism and stare decisis for First Things.
At First Things, Professor Mark L. Movsesian writes about Azerbaijan's long-simmering war with Armenia over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2017, we wrote about Professor Movsesian’s time teaching at the American University of Armenia.
In this piece for Bloomberg Law, Professor Jeff Sovern writes that Covid-19 liability waivers may be useful to the businesses they protect, but are terrible for society at large. Professor Sovern has also published a few opinion pieces on Covid-19 and the law and has been quoted in Front Office Sports, among other publications. Dialogues Build and Sustain Community Run by the student-led Coalition for Social Justice (CSJ), our semi-annual Dialogue Day is a traditional moment for St. John’s Law students, faculty, administrators, and staff to engage meaningfully outside of the classroom. For their Fall 2020 Dialogue Day, the CSJ brought leaders in the field online for a candid, timely, and dynamic St. John’s Law community discussion about election law and voter suppression.
