Three bills clear Senate Education Committee 


The Senate Education Committee passed three bills this afternoon.

HB 874 requires the placement of automatic defibrillators in all public schools during "all school hours and during any school related function."  The bill also requires the identification of internal response teams of at least five educators and two practice drills, one per semester.

HB 1183 states: "If a local board of education provides information on immunizations, infectious diseases, medications, or other school health issues to parents and guardians of students in grades six through 12," then information about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes shall be included.

HB 1122 specifies funding for locally chartered and state chartered schools for superintendents and principals.

House Education Committee meets tomorrow


The House Education Committee meets tomorrow to hear SB 50, which provides for instruction in lifeguarding and aquatic safety.

House Retirement Committee meets tomorrow


The House Retirement Committee meets tomorrow at 3 p.m.  No agenda has been posted.

Senate Higher Education Committee hears bill to provide in-state tuition for certain non-citizens


The Senate Higher Education Committee will hear a bill tomorrow by Sen. Jason Esteves, D-Atlanta, SB 476, to allow certain non-citizens to qualify for in-state tuition in Georgia's technical college system, if the student:

1) Obtained a high school diploma or state approved high school equivalency (HSE) diploma in this state;

(2) Attended a high school in this state for three years before obtaining a high school diploma or state approved high school equivalency (HSE) diploma in this state;

(3) Is legally authorized to work in this state; and

(4) Has not been convicted of a felony, a high and aggravated misdemeanor, or three or more misdemeanors and does not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety."
