Growing More in Less Space |
There are several techniques that can help gardeners get maximum productivity from a small space. The first is to interplant. With this technique you alternate rows of fast and low maturing vegetables. For example, plant a row of leaf lettuce between two rows of tomatoes or cabbage. The fast-maturing crop, lettuce, is harvested first leaving the space available for the slower crop to mature.
A variation on this, sometimes called intercropping, is when you sow a slow and a fast-maturing crop together in one area. Again, the fast-maturing vegetables are harvested first leaving space for the slow maturing crop. An example of this is to plant radishes (fast maturing) and carrots (slow maturing) together.

Avian Influenza and Biosecurity in 2025 |
Recently, there has been an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial poultry flock in eastern Wisconsin. In response to this outbreak, a great deal of time and effort will be spent quarantining and testing adjacent flocks, and flocks testing positive are depopulated. This virus does not discriminate between large or small flocks, or husbandry type. In the past, large commercial flocks were infected, as well as small hobby flocks. In response to confirmed AI outbreaks, many countries refuse to allow poultry and egg shipments from affected states. Because of the public health and economic consequences, it is important for all poultry owners to do everything they can to prevent infection in their flocks.

Midwest Alfalfa Insect Regional Survey |
Alfalfa weevil was major issue in western Wisconsin in 2024. The University of Minnesota is leading a Midwest Alfalfa Insect Regional Survey to gather farmer input on alfalfa pest issues.
This survey is primarily meant to assess how farmers are managing alfalfa weevil after reports of resurgences of this pest in some areas of the Midwest to help guide future research and extension recommendations. This survey is also being used to assess needs for other alfalfa insect issues that may need additional focus in the future.
