Annual Dr. martin luther king, jr. convocation

On Friday, January 13, Brebeuf Jesuit will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation in the West Gym from 10:15-11:25 a.m.
The convocation is a collaboration between the Black Student Union and the Diversity Office, and this year’s program will be a special one. A troupe of actors from PinPoints Theatre of Washington, D.C. will be coming to present a much-acclaimed play called The Meeting, which is premised upon a fictitious encounter between Dr. King and Malcolm X in a hotel room. The play asks the audience to consider the question of how the motivations and approaches to social change of Dr. King and Malcolm X compare with one another and how such a conversation might have unfolded. The production has been performed on countless college campuses and in numerous corporate settings to great acclaim.
This program was made possible with the support of the Mothers Association Enrichment Committee, the Dads Club, and the Alumni Association.  Everyone within the school community is invited to attend.
Officers from the Black Student Union will open and close the convocation.
If you have questions about this coming program, contact Freezell Brown, Director of Diversity and Inclusion.
NOTE ABOUT ASSEMBLIES REQUIRING CONVOCATION DRESS
This will be the first of this year’s assemblies where “convocation dress” is required of students. (There will be three others this semester, for a guest speaker on February 9, Holy Week Mass on April 12, and the Spring Honors Convocation on April 25.)
A reminder from Brebeuf Jesuit's Handbook guidelines for convocation dress:
  • Boys: dress pants, dress shirt and tie. Sweaters and sports jackets are optional. All students’ shirts should be tucked into their pants at all times.
  • Girls: a dress, a skirt or dress slacks with an appropriate top and dress shoes. All dresses or skirts must touch the knee.

Picture of the Week

Congratulations to Ethan Franklin '17!
Brebeuf Jesuit is proud to celebrate another of our students acheiving the rank of Eagle Scout!
Ethan received his Eagle Scout on November 9, 2016. Ethan's project, which will serve the South Side animal shelter, was to build and install five large dog houses enabling them to increase their capacity for larger breed dogs who are often turned away.

Loves About Brebeuf
There are so many things I love about Brebeuf, but the one that stands out the most is the community. Everyone at Brebeuf is so nice and supportive to one another. The teachers really care about their students and want them to do well and most try to build relationships with their students. Students from all classes are very welcoming and nice to one another and the faculty do a great job of being helpful to everyone. There is always someone that cheers up your day. The sense of community we have at Brebeuf is the thing I will for sure miss the most.
Favorite Class
My favorite class is AP Macroeconomics because Mr. Tague is such a cool teacher and he teaches every lesson with this energy that I look forward to every class. I also have an interest in business, and Macroeconomics helps me make connections and find out what I like and dislike. All of the courses at Brebeuf are challenging and thought provoking but Macroeconomics is my favorite because of Mr. Tague and my interest in the material.
Future Plans
I am not yet sure where I am going to college or what I plan to have as my major, but most of the colleges I applied to are in the Midwest and I plan on studying something related to business.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Admissions Ambassador
Black Student Union (BSU)
Peer Mentor
Basketball Cheerleading (Freshman & Sophomore year)
I also babysit occasionally
Random Fact
When I was six, my dad went to Brazil, and as a present he brought me back a piranha. I don’t have him anymore because I unfortunately lost him.
What has been your favorite Brebeuf experience or most memorable moment so far?
One of my favorite experiences at Brebeuf is freshman year when I used to go to all of Brebeuf’s home football games with my friends. We went even when it got really cold and you had to buy hand warmers and hot chocolate from the concessions so you wouldn’t freeze. I really like football and this was a memory that stays with me when I think about Brebeuf.
What are you most looking forward to this semester?
Honestly, the thing that I am looking forward to most this semester is figuring out where I will be headed in the fall. It has been a very stressful process applying to all these schools and I am excited to pick from the options of schools I have!

Virtual Learning Days For Future Weather Closures

The Indiana Department of Education once again approved Brebeuf’s application for their Distance Virtual Learning Program.  The program provides a way for schools meeting the criteria to create a virtual learning environment to replace missed class time, avoiding the necessity for makeup days caused by severe weather cancellations.
During any future weather closures for Brebeuf Jesuit, if a Virtual Learning Day is warranted, families will receive instructions detailing how to access Portals individual class pages regarding the Virtual Learning Program expectations for that class day, as posted by each class instructor.
Virtual Learning Days ensure that when students return to school, the progression of learning has experienced only a minimal disruption.
In the event of a regular class day being cancelled, students will find the following:
  • Assignment posted to Portals on their class page by 8:30 a.m. the day of class cancellation
  • Title of assignment clearly indicating – “Virtual Learning Day Assignment for (date)”
  • A clear deadline for completion, either that day or in the future
If you have any questions concerning Virtual Learning Days, please contact Jen LaMaster, Assistant Principal at jlamaster@brebeuf.org.

#BrebeufDrives Resume Next Week

Thanks again to everyone that made contributions to our last #BrebeufDrives collection right before the break.  It was our most successful Help for the Holidays Drive to date!  Our #BrebeufDrives will resume on Tuesday, January 17 and conclude on Friday, February 17.  Our collection will benefit the Dayspring Center for Homeless Families. The Dayspring Center indicated several needs that our drive can help fulfill: new twin sheets, twin blankets, pillows, and towels. These much-needed items can be dropped off in the collection boxes located in the Gym Lobby and Front Lobby.  Items may also be left in Nick Klingler's office located next to the chapel.
The Dayspring Center provides, safe shelter, meals, and support services to help the guests staying with them become a healthy, independent family again. These donations truly make a difference!
For questions about the drives please contact Nick Klingler in Community Service at nklingler@brebeuf.org or Debra Parker at debrabparker@gmail.com.

New Orleans Spring Break Service Trip

Brebeuf will be sending a group of students on the annual Spring Break service trip to New Orleans April 2-8, 2017.  This trip provides a unique experience for students wanting to spend their Spring Break helping others who have undergone the tragedy and destruction of Hurricane Katrina. We will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity and assisting the construction of affordable housing for the residents in need. Students will also explore the city to experience its rich culture and witness the rebuilding of New Orleans first-hand.
Interested students must pick up an application packet in the Community Service Office. The trip is limited to 22 students.
Please contact Nick Klingler with any questions at nklingler@brebeuf.org  or 317.524.7005.

Second Semester Signups for Dayspring Now Available

Every Thursday a group of three to five students, a Brebeuf teacher, and a Brebeuf mom will be traveling to the Dayspring Center (a homeless shelter for families) to serve lunch and engage in conversation with the staff and residents. This will be an opportunity for our group to learn more about homelessness in Indianapolis and volunteer outside of their required service hours. This will be the third year of our partnership with Dayspring and we have found it to provide truly meaningful service experiences for our students.
Our first trip this semester will be Thursday, January 12.  We leave school at 11:00 a.m. and return to school by 2:00 p.m. which results in the students missing 2-3 periods of the school day.
You or your student can sign up for a trip to Dayspring here.
Please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org with any questions regarding our weekly trips to Dayspring.
