“Butterfly In the Sky,” a documentary chronicling the 26-season PBS television show “Reading Rainbow,” will be released widely on April 30. SOE Advisory Board Member and Adjunct Instructor Lynne Brenner Ganek co-produced the show, which won over 200 broadcast awards.

Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Amaarah DeCuir was the featured interviewee in the USA Today article, "Muslim Students Face Tough Challenges During Ramadan. Here's What Teachers Can Do." Her op-ed "Ramadan Finds Greater Recognition In America’s Public Schools" was updated and republished in both The Conservation and Mississippi Free Press.
SOE’s Future Teacher Tutors program was the centerpiece of an article for The 74, "A New Playbook to Recruit Tutors: Tap Teachers in Training," about how hiring tutors from teacher prep programs has helped stabilize schools amid nationwide labor shortages.

Senior Professorial Lecturers Drs. Phelton Moss and Antonio Ellis co-wrote a Diverse: Issues in Higher Education op-ed, "Ruling on Texas School's Hair Policies: A Setback for Diversity and Inclusion," about the ruling by a Texas judge who determined that a school's hair length policies did not violate a law aimed at prohibiting discrimination based on hairstyle and texture. Assistant Professor Dr. Kenjus Watson also penned an op-ed on this subject for The Conversation, "A Texas Court Ruling on a Black Student Wearing Hair in Long Locs Reflects History of Racism in Schools." His commentary offered insights on the message sent by the court, what options black students have, and what school leaders should consider in the aftermath.
Dr. Sarah Trembath, EdD ’23, and AU professorial lecturer of literature, wrote "Active Engagement," a review of the book Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain for Washington Independent Review of Books.

Professorial Lecturer Dr. Rebecca Lubin was selected as an Emerging Special Educators of Color awardee at the 2024 Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Special Education Convention and Expo. In May, she will give a presentation, "Brilliant State of Mind: The Methods for Unveiling Archetypes and Aspirations," at the University of Connecticut's 2024 Wallace Research Symposium on Talent Development.Â

SOE faculty members Drs. Michael Gibbons, Jisun Jeong, Terence Ngwa, and Elizabeth Worden each gave presentations at the 68th annual conference of the Comparative and International Education Society, CIES 2024 - The Power of Protest. Drs. Golnar Abedin and Deepa Srikantaiah served as panelists at the event.
Antiracist Pedagogy Scholar Dr. Annice Fisher launched a pilot class of her Exercising Conscious Leadership course at the Cook County Department of Corrections women’s division, where students who completed the sessions received a certificate of completion through her company, Developing Capacity Coaching.

Anna Lapera, MAT ’17, authored Mani Semilla Finds Her Quetzal Voice, a book inspired by her teaching experience during her time at AU and since. It was named the “Most anticipated middle grade book of 2024” by the School Library Journal.Â

Adjunct Professorial Lecturer Dr. Tomiko Ball and Senior Professorial Lecturer Dr. Samantha Cohen co-authored a chapter, "Keeping One Another Charged for an Evolving Antiracist Journey," in the book The IMPACT of the Scholarly Practitioner Doctorate: Developing Socially-Just Leaders to Make Equitable Change.

Assistant Professor Dr. Emily Peterson co-wrote a study, "Revising Teacher Candidates’ Beliefs and Knowledge of the Learning Styles Neuromyth," about how to address the myth that students learn best when instruction matches their preferred modality of learning - auditory, visual, kinesthetic, etc. Non-paywall content until April 18.
Professor Dr. Bridget Trogden published a paper with the American Society for Engineering Education Conference Proceedings titled, "The Educational Benefits of Operating a Service-Learning Course as a Corporate Structure." It describes how multidisciplinary project-based learning brings about improved student educational outcomes and career competencies.
