Food allergies affect approximately 1 in 13 children in the United States, and research shows that those who live in vulnerable socioeconomic circumstances face both a higher risk of developing certain food allergies and a lower likelihood of access to optimal education and treatment. Military families face unique challenges related to medical care for food allergies because of their frequent moves. At CHKD’s outpatient allergy clinic 38% of food allergy patients have Medicaid insurance, and another 12% are covered by Tricare.
These factors, along with the energetic commitment of pediatric allergy specialists at CHKD to community engagement, were instrumental in selecting Hampton Roads as a FARE Neighborhood. In addition, Dr. Milton Brown, Senior Vice President of Research at EVMS/ODU is a member of the national FARE board.
“Over the past 5 years, we’ve performed almost 9,000 food challenges at CHKD,” said Dr. Angela Hogan, who developed the Life-Threatening Allergy Management Plan used in all eight of our regional school districts. She and her colleagues offer the latest treatments for food allergies, including oral immunotherapy like Palforzia for peanut allergy, sublingual immunotherapy, and biologic therapy for patients with IgE-mediated food allergies.
