Prior to our winter break, seniors practiced their "This I Believe" speeches at Edwards Church in Northampton. The acoustics help students to understand how to use one's voice as a tool to create meaning.

"THIS I BELIEVE" SPEECHES

Next week our seniors will participate in The Academy's tradition of delivering their "This I Believe" speeches. "This I Believe" speeches were introduced in the 1950s by Edward R. Murrow; they give Academy seniors the opportunity to express something of import about themselves in a public forum.
On Wednesday(2:15 PM) and Thursday (9:20 AM) our seniors will present their speeches to the entire school. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
Although these speeches are geared toward school-aged students, families should be aware that topics can sometimes involve mature themes. This speech is a capstone opportunity for our oldest students to demonstrate their achievement of one of The Academy's ideals, to "find their voices and speak their minds" on a subject that is dear to them.
I encourage you to chat with your children about the speeches. They are an exciting rite of passage which all of our students will enjoy and, one day, in which all will participate.

Exam Schedule January 17-19, 2017

Mid year exams will begin on Tuesday, January 17th and will continue through Thursday, January 19th. The schedule for these three days can be found here. Exams are designed to be completed in two hours. For those students with an extended time accommodation, a third hour is available. When finished with exams, students can study for another exam, read a book, or, after two hours have passed, have some quiet down time in designated areas of campus.
NOTE:  There is no school on Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Day, and no classes will be held on Friday, January 20.  Early buses will run Tuesday through Thursday and there will be no sports or drama that week.

Spring 2017 Studio Block Offerings

We're pleased to announce an exciting slate of spring 2017 Studio Block offerings! Students will sign up for Studio Blocks on January 12th. Between now and then, we encourage students and families to peruse these listings in our Studio Block catalogue and come prepared to indicate their choices next week.

SPORTS RECAP, Week of January 2

After losing on Tuesday to Mohawk, the girls' basketball team picked up its first win of the season against BART on Wednesday. In a thrilling nail-biter that went into overtime, the girls fought hard to prevail 16-14. It was a full team effort with everyone contributing on both ends of the court.
After weeks of dryland exercises and agility training, our small but mighty alpine race team has finally been able to be out on the snow this week.  Their first race of the season will be held at Berkshire East in the afternoon of Wednesday, January 11.
Recreational skiing has begun in earnest, with groups going each day that the mountain is open. It's largely been a week full of fun, with the exception of a rain day on Tuesday.

Academy Close-Ups

Over winter break, the Academy Parents Council (APC) hosted a family skate party at the Collins-Moylan Rink in Greenfield
During a field trip prior to the winter break, the 8th grade learned about opioids with Hampshire Hope at the Northampton District Attorney's office.
