CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, is China's most important traditional festival. It is the most important celebration for families, and a weeklong official public holiday. It starts on January 28, 2017. The coming year will be the year of the rooster!

On Wednesday, February 1, we will observe the Chinese New Year with a special celebration at The Academy. Highlights include authentic decorations, fun facts about this important cultural holiday, a PowerPoint presentation on Chinese cinematography by our own Yilin, and a delicious meal prepared by Mr. Langston and the members of the Arts and Cultural Exchange Council

Our two new students from China, who we have welcomed into our community this week, willl support us in our efforts to celebrate as authentically as possible.

ALL SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT for SEMESTER TWO

In the coming months, the Community Service Council will be promoting and organizing a drive for school supplies to fill 20 backpacks for students in need.  These will be assembled and donated prior to the 2017-2018 school year.  Half of the backpacks will be donated to the United Way of Franklin County's Women's Way "Blooming Backpacks" project, and the other half to students from newly-arrived refugee families from all over the world that are supported by Jewish Family Services of Western Massachusetts.
The Community Service Council will be collecting specific supplies during 7 two-week periods. Students are encouraged to talk among themselves and watch the tallies for each period so we can be sure to have the requested amount of each item.  In order for families to plan and shop for items that may be on sale during the course of the semester, please consult this list.

Sports Recap - Week of January 23

The Academy ski team had a strong showing at Wednesday's slalom race at Berkshire East, with Kyle Nitzsche finishing 33rd and Reilly Obsorne finishing 35th.
The girls' basketball team had an active week with games against Stoneleigh Burnham's JV team and Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School's middle school team. On Wednesday, the girls took an early lead against SBS and their strong defense allowed them to hold on to the lead the entire game.  Elaina Gibb-Buursma, Eliza Bigelow, and Cristy and Macy Kasbo led the defensive effort, while the team got strong rebounding from Ruby Rothenberg and Adeena Bromberg-Seltzer. Eliza (10 points), Sylvie Mauri (5 points, 3 assists), and Cristy (2 points, 2 assists) had great games on the offensive end. On Thursday, despite playing with a lot of energy and heart, the team lost to a strong PVCICS team.

March Break Trip to Cleveland!

In addition to our trip to France during Spring Break this year, we are offering a chance to travel to another, more local destination: Cleveland, OH. Aside from being Dr. Bloomfield's home town, Cleveland offers a wide array of cultural experiences from art, to performance to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The cost for this 4-day, 4-night trip (March 12-16) will be $575, which includes all meals. A packet of information is available to download HERE. Forms and payments are due back by Friday, February 3. Contact Dr. Bloomfield with any questions (or if you are a parent interested in being a chaperone).
