End of Season Sports Celebration!!

Please come out and join our student athletes in celebrating the end of their fall seasons! Join your child in their activity for a bit or simply spectate as other students' parents jump in to kick a soccer ball around, do some yoga, or go for a jog to our upper field. We'll also spend time celebrating individuals and groups that have done great work this fall.
Good weather (fingers crossed!) and snacks will round out the celebration. Contact John Schatz for more information.

Open Mic

Academy students, faculty, friends of The Academy (and alum Sophie Rehmus '10) showcased their talents at last night's Open Mic, featuring 12 acts. Congratulations, all!

The Cupcake Challenge – October 28th

The Challenge: take a blank canvas (a plain cupcake) and create a masterpiece.  Each team will be given plain cupcakes and a bag of mystery decorations. It’s up to you to create something special.
Cupcakes will be judged (and eaten) at the Halloween Dance. The winning team will be announced at Morning Meeting on Monday.
Teams participating in the Cupcake Challenge will stay at school until the dance begins. They will plan and decorate their cupcakes, then watch the latest Ghostbusters movie. Bring your costumes for the dance and something for dinner. Registration has closed. Contact Steph Powers for more information.

Sports Recap - Week of October 17

The girls JV Soccer team had an action-packed week. On Tuesday, they celebrated an amazing shutout win against Greenfield Center School. The final score was 8-0 with goals from Ruby Chase (2), Saraphina Forman (2), Corinne Laird (2), and Esme Marini-Rapoport (1, her first!). The final goal was scored by one of GCS's defenders. A majority of the team had several shot attempts and played incredibly well, especially in the new positions that many were asked to play. On Wednesday, they played Greenfield Middle School and earned a second win.  Goals from Saraphina, Bella Greenbacher (her first!), and Corinne led the team to a 3-0 victory. Celeste DiLeo played well both offensively and defensively, saving the team multiple times. On Thursday, the girls JV played Hopkins Academy. Though they lost 5-0, the score did not reflect the effort and optimism exhibited by the team throughout the entire game. They were helped out by several varsity players, including Lila Goleman, who played goalie for her first game ever and made 4 saves in total.
The entire JV squad also helped out the the girls Varsity Soccer team on Monday in their 3-0 loss to Putney. Lilah Feitner had an impressive 31 saves in goal!
The boys JV Soccer team had two games this week. They tied Four Rivers on Tuesday, 1-1. Ben Brause-Breslow had a strong game in goal with over ten saves. Raymond Mossman scored on an assist by Will Draxler, while Nick Forbes, Zander Frangie, Evan Comeaux and also had strong performances. On Thursday, the team lost to Greenfield Middle School 6-1. Raymond scored the team's lone goal and Noah Friedman-Kassis also had some great attacks. Alec Draxler had a strong game at striker, while Sam Rancourt and Tor Olsson played well on defense.
The boys Varsity Soccer team also played two games this week. They lost at Putney on Monday, 5-4. After being down 5-0 at the half, Charlemont battled back to nearly even the score. The Aardvarks were led by Aiden Brenizer (3 goals, 1 assist)  and Nat Boyd-Owens (1 goal) while Tucker Boyd, Jaromil Topolski, and Winston Posner all made great contributions. Tucker Zakon-Anderson played a great game in goal with 24 saves. The boys defeated the Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School 3-2 at home on Wednesday. Aiden Brenizer, Ben Schocket-Greene, and Tucker Zakon-Anderson scored while Schocket-Greene also had an assist. Sam Fisher played a great first game in goal.

LUNCH WITH AN ALUM:
SOPHIA REHMUS '10

On Thursday Sophie Rehmus joined students and faculty for lunch.  As part of a Fulbright scholarship, Sophie spent the past year living in and researching nine (of over 24) revived ghost towns in Spain, which in large part have taken the form of self-sustaining eco-communities.  She investigated, and discussed in her Academy presentation, how social well being, through close community, is possible, tangible, and essential to both mental health and human happiness. Sophie's blog reflects her research.

Academy Close-Ups

Students work in Mr. Green's class using a palette of black, white and burnt sienna. This is the last exercise of a set of four monochrome paintings. Students use simple tonal construction to create form. In addition, this sort of tonal development is the basis for traditional painting technique, and for overall development in the "Practice of Painting".
Ms. Neeley's Yoga and Fitness class is a mixture of classic Yoga and intense cardio exercises. The class is attended by students and faculty. Participants call it YogAerobics!
Using mirrors and their knowledge of similar figures, Algebra I students in Ms.Goudreault's class calculate the height of unknown objects like trees, the soccer goals, and the building.

APC Hike

Big thanks to Paul Catanzaro P21 for organizing a great hike on the Busby Trail to Spruce Hill in Savoy Mountain State Forest on Saturday, October 15. All enjoyed a leisurely hike in excellent fall foliage with students bonding and adults getting to know one another. The view across the valley to Mount Greylock so soon after Mountain Day was a treat, too.

CORNUCOPIA AUCTION HIGHLIGHT

This week the Cornucopia Auction committee highlights a signed and numbered print by Ashfield artist Ken Kipen. Pond Lilies is a matted and mounted photographic print, number 6 of a limited edition. This archival print has been hand developed and corrected by the artist for maximum clarity and contrast. Ken Kipen has formally studied dark room and camera work since the early 1950s in studios from Michigan to Florida.
The artist currently resides in Ashfield and continues to explore the world of traditional black and white print photography and development. This matted print retails for $150; bidding will start at $60.

Blood Drive

The Class of 2017 would like to thank all who supported our Fall Blood Drive in so many ways. From a bounty of delicious baked goods to 29 pints of blood collected (multiply that number by 3 to think of all the lives we may have saved!), it was a successful drive. We look forward to topping that number in the spring.
