Dear Eagle Nation:
As we embark on the journey of February, a month devoted to commemorating the rich tapestry of Black history, we are reminded of the profound significance of this time. Carter G. Woodson, the forward-thinking founder of Black History Month, passionately committed himself to ensuring the comprehensive inclusion of Black Americans in the broader narrative of American history. In this endeavor, we draw inspiration not only from the national stage but also from institutions such as Coppin State University, which stands as a beacon of education and empowerment within the Black community.
Woodson's mission was clear: to guard against oversight, forgetfulness, or erasure of the invaluable contributions made by Black individuals. This Black History Month provides us with an opportunity at the intersection of reflection and progress. We pay homage to the extraordinary contributions of Black trailblazers who defied adversity, and we acknowledge the contemporary leaders shaping a world that strives for justice, equality, and empowerment.
From historical figures who broke barriers to modern-day advocates fostering change, the narrative reflects the resilience, courage, and indomitable spirit of the Black community. As we celebrate this month, we recognize not only the historical achievements but also the ongoing pursuit of a society where diversity, equity, and inclusion form the bedrock of our shared story.
Let us not solely honor the past but also celebrate the present, envisioning a future where every individual is acknowledged, respected, and empowered. Together, let's amplify the voices that deserve to be heard, draw lessons from history, and actively contribute to creating a world that values and uplifts all its members.

President & First Lady's Closet
Over the past year, we have engaged in several conversations about establishing the President and First Lady’s Coppin Closet. This exciting initiative is the direct result of collaborative efforts between the Office of the President, the Division of Enrollment Management and Students Affairs, and the Student Government Association.
The closet will be located on the lower level of the J. Millard Tawes College Center. The purpose of the closet is to provide our students with access to professional and everyday wardrobe items to meet their daily needs or prepare for internships, job interviews, conferences, galas and more. The closet is open to all Coppin State University students. All items from the closet are 100% free of charge and students can either borrow or keep these items to suit their individual needs. Students may borrow or keep up to five items in an academic semester.
Eagle Nation, we need your help. If you would like to support this important endeavor, please consider donating any of the following items:
• Sport coats and suits (black, brown, grey, tan, and blue)
• Dress pants, slacks, especially dark colors, or tan/khaki
• Dress shirts/blouses (all sizes)
• Women’s Business suits
• Ties
• Shoes (men and women) (black or brown)
• Belts (men and women) (black or brown)
• Athletic shoes
• Dresses/skirts
• Oxford shirts
• Jeans
• Coats, jackets, gloves, hats, and scarfs
• Sweaters and vests
• Fashionable accent accessories (for men and women)
• Ball gowns
While we appreciate your support, please note that the students look best in traditional – not outdated – styles. Please do not donate clothes with stains, tears, missing buttons, worn collars, or advertising/marketing logos. We would appreciate it if the donations were dry-cleaned and/or laundered, preferably on hangers. Items should be dropped off on Friday, February 9 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in Lot D.

Join Dr. Charlotte Woods on Thursday, February 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Enoch Pratt Central Library. She'll be uniting with other women and men from Divine Nine organizations for a vital discussion. Together, they'll explore the challenges black individuals encounter in accessing medical care, as well as the stigmas and barriers surrounding mental health within the black community.

White House HBCU Scholars Application
The 2024 HBCU Scholar Recognition Program Application is now open, courtesy of The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Development through Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The Initiative is actively seeking exceptional and talented student leaders from HBCUs to participate in this prestigious program. Those chosen will collaborate with the Initiative for an entire academic school year, engaging in an immersive experience alongside fellow students and partners from diverse disciplines.
The nomination period closes April 19, 2024.
