Dean Jelani Jefferson Exum is pleased to announce that James Pitaro '94, Chairman, ESPN, will address the graduates at the Law School’s Commencement on Sunday, May 18, 2025. “We’re delighted that Jimmy Pitaro will return home to St. John’s to speak at the Law School’s Commencement Exercises,” she says. “He offers our graduates a unique perspective on law and business grounded in decades of exceptional leadership that have taken him to the heights of the sports and media industries. "Distorted Narratives in the Treatment Program Complex," an article by Professor Evelyn Malavé, appears in the Fordham Law Review. It examines aspects of the "combined universe of specialty courts and sentencing alternatives" in the criminal legal system.
William S. Hein has published Sports Betting: A Legal Research Guide, a work co-authored by Professor and Associate Dean for Library Services Courtney Selby and Christopher Anderson, Deputy Director for Library Services at St. John’s Rittenberg Law Library.
Professor Jacob Todres’ article, “Current Developments in Tax Malpractice: Basics and Beyond,” appears in the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review. In addition to analyzing recent developments, the article raises the issue of what is “tax malpractice”: is it limited to a tax-related error, or does it include any negligence that causes an increase in taxes?

Professor Ashley B. Armstrong presented at the Legal Writing Institute’s Teacher Training Bootcamp 2.0, as part of a panel discussion introducing effective classroom exercises to participants. Her exercise focused on crafting impactful preliminary statements and included analysis of several examples.
Professor Robin Boyle took the guest seat for a recent podcast episode that tapped her expertise on prosecuting cult leaders. Her forthcoming book, Taken No More: Protecting Your Children Against Traffickers and Cults (Bloomsbury), is written as a practical guide for parents, caregivers, and mental health professionals.
At the New England Legal Writing Conference at Boston University School of Law, Professor Louis Jim participated in a panel discussion that addressed best practices in eliminating and minimizing implicit bias in evaluating students participating in moot court competitions.
A Scholastica blog post titled “What Legal Scholars Are Writing About: 2024 Edition” features Professor Abel Rodríguez's Cornell Law Review article, "Lethal Immigration Enforcement," among other among “noteworthy pieces.”
Professor Rosemary Salomone’s award-winning book, The Rise of English: Global Politics and the Power of Language (Oxford University Press), is quoted extensively in the New Yorker's recent article, “How Much Sway Does Our Language Have Over Our Thinking?”

Please join us in congratulating Michaela Balboni '25, Cathryn Ricciardelli '25, and Emilio Teta '25, who received scholarship awards recently from the Columbian Lawyers Association of Queens County. Emilio's scholarship is named in honor of the late St. John's Law alumnus Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. '53C, '55L, '94HON, who made a transformational gift to establish the Law School's Mattone Institute for Real Estate Law.
Let's also offer kudos to Jarif H. Khan '25, who received the SAME - Gogick, Byrne & O’Neill, LLP Scholarship for students interested in construction law.
Eight St. John's Law students attended the Hellenic Lawyers Association's 34th Annual Scholarship Dinner Gala. Enjoying this special opportunity to celebrate and network with attorneys in the field were: Peter A. Deplas '27; Tiffany Deplas '25; Anastasia Kaliabakos '27; Evgenia P. Last semester, seven students from our in-house Securities Arbitration Clinic traveled to Washington, D.C. with Clinic Directors Christine Lazaro and Elissa Germaine to learn how administrative agencies and self-regulatory organizations work to protect, educate, and advocate for investors.
