Notes from Dept Head 📝
Friend,
Welcome to a new academic year! It is great to see so many familiar and new faces on campus and a slow return to more normal operations here on the Tucson campus and beyond. The high transmissivity of the COVID-19 Delta variant has kept us at a higher level of vigilance than might otherwise be necessary, and we’re all appropriately required to wear masks in indoor UArizona spaces when joined by other people, including in classrooms and laboratories. Fortunately, the majority of our folks are getting fully vaccinated, which is the key to further beating back the pandemic. Thanks for getting vaxed! It’s been an exciting monsoon this year, and Tucson looks downright tropical these days. The mountains are about as green as we’ve seen them (though we need to check the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and the rivers actually have water in them! It’s refreshing to see so much soil moisture and photosynthesis after last year’s “non-soon”. To keep track of rainfall totals in your neighborhood, check out Rainlog.org, a website created by ENVS’s Dr. Mike Crimmins and colleagues.
